Who now then?...

I agree, we have never really seen the player we signed, in Fernandinho. He was sacrificed to allow Pellegrini to play with a man short in midfield (I bet he doesn't do it at West Ham) & has been a 'holding' player ever since.

Which is why I find it both amusing & very annoying when people on here talk about him being 'limited' as a footballer. I'm pretty sure that if he was given 4, 5 games in a more creative role, he would get used to it again & be brilliant there.
Spot on fella. He's always had everything but like you say, had to sacrifice his natural game to suit his partners in midfield or the system. His natural game is more akin to Gerrard in his pomp. High tempo all action. But I guess that type of player is not as popular as it was possibly a decade ago. Me personally I would have loved to have seen him as an 8 in are team. He would be unstoppable.

Ndombele, Llorente (Madrid), Lemina, Paquetá? could be anyone, only a few days to wait, Stones would be interesting there, tried it yesterday could see him DM for us if nobody comes in over maybe Gundo.

Rabiot is an interesting one, out of contract in 12 months and would be a good fit here. Lemina has been mentioned a lot but I'm not sure how reasonable Southampton will be with the price.

Aaron Ramsey, Remo Freuler, Diadie Samassékou, Héctor Herrera and Johannes Geis are also out of contract in a year so may be on the radar.
