Who now then?...

CBs: Maguire, Laporte, Otamendi and Kompany
DMs: Fernandinho, Stones, Gundogan
Looks good to me

All seven of those players will want regular gametime. Only three spaces. I can't see it working.

Stones as a DM doesn't sound likely to me. He's not as mobile as we'd like and while his passing is good by CB standards I imagine it would fall short compared to Fernandinho, Gundogan or Jorginho.

Can't really see Stones at DM. He's good on the ball with a bit of time and facing forward but he won't get as much time at DM and will often be required to play out of tighter positions. He's a CB.

Anyone else think Stones could be transformed to a DM, and we buy Maguire? Stones is brilliant on the ball, good passer, he`s intelligent, has decent pace and is a great tackler. His only shortcoming IMO, is his marking and concentration at times, and I don`t think that would be exposed to an equal extent, as if he was playing CB

Yeahhhh I have always thought this! But at the same time I’m sure pep has and for some reason or another he has decided against it

This season we had Otamendi, Kompany, Stones and Laporte as CBs, and Fernandinho, Yaya and Gundogan as DMs. Apart from Yaya, everyone got a lot of playing time, especially Fernandinho since Yaya was shit, and Gundogan had to cover for KDB or Merlin sometimes. Don`t think 6 (Laporte, Maguire, Otamendi, Kompany, Fernandinho and Stones) players would be too much for 3 positions (if Gundogan plays further forward)

Move Delph into midfield to compete with Gundogan and Fernandinho and bring in Sandro to compete at LB with Mendy.

As good as our squad is, I hope we sign some sort of block-buster player this window - not so much for the P/L but for the Champion's League.

In the one-off C/L matches (and indeed the FA Cup), anything might happen. But if your squad is just so much better than the opposition, talent offsets circumstance, at least partially. To win the C/L (CIty's ambition) requires luck and a good squad (but the better your squad, the less luck required).
