Who should be the next leader of the Tory party?

No serious politician or leader makes those comments on Scotland.

According to the Mail, she is now walking back her ‘let’s cut the pay of nurses and police north of Watford‘ policy. Oh, and anyone allying themselves to Truss can’t be taken seriously, either. Clearly, they have defective judgement.

Cabinet allies of Truss currently phoning Tory MPs saying the policy is going to be ditched. Fine. But why not just say it publicly.’@MoS

She’s not trying to appeal to the masses, just enough grass root Tories to get in. She’d tell you she’d burn foreigners at the stake if she thinks that’s what will giver her power. She’s saying what she thinks folk want to hear. As Marx said, these are my principles and if you don’t like them I have others.

I’m not a fan of hers at all but she’s smarter than you’re giving her credit for - what is everyone talking about today? Truss’s comments and her policies… not what Sunak said or his policies - she is dominating the media. She’s showing herself to be a bruiser as well.

She's like a druggie looking for his next fix, only interested in the here and now. She'll say whatever she thinks the people in front of her want to hear and will be totally oblivious to the longer term consequences of what she has just said - or she honestly thinks she can keep making stuff up to solve the problems caused by her most recent utterances.

By following that course she's giving her opponents all the ammunition they need to keep her on the back foot throughout her time as PM - and I suspect it won't be for very long because she can't even fall back on her charisma to cover up for her abject uselessness.

Truss still the clear favourite with the bookies. It's a pretty shit choice really but Sunak is definitely the more competent one for me. It's all fine and dandy promising tax cuts and stuff like that may well bag extra votes in the next general election but the country is already massively in debt and inflation is spiralling out of control. The conundrum for Sunak if he gets in is what he's going to do about the cost of living crisis if he's not going to cut taxes. There are other ways though - more tax on the energy companies to help with ever rising energy bills for one.
Not quite how taxing the energy companies would work. To reduce bills you would need massive increase in taxes and what would the outcome of that be?
Better to act directly on the bills by capping prices and maybe increasing benefits.

I agree with you. She’s already set her stall out for a hostile relationship with Scotland - she could have made her point more politically sensitive but when you’re trying to be Thatcher Mk2 it’s hard to be sensitive. I haven’t really followed the debate that much as been on me hols but has she said much about the relationship with the EU?

For me, it just highlights the absolute arrogance and, frankly, naivety of politicians like Truss and why they shouldn’t be anywhere near any position of authority. As you say, the intention to immediately cut taxes is cornerstone of her candidacy, and to go into a debate with such little understanding of what this would entail just smacks of amateurishness.

She talks of not repaying the COVID debt for three years. But the deficits caused by COVID have already been funded by debt, and unless she’s advocating defaulting on gilt repayments, we’ll continue to repay the COVID debt regardless of anything she would do in power. So the first part of her plan is incorrectly defined and her rhetoric reflects a poor understanding of the situation.

What she actually appears to be advocating is letting the public sector net debt ratio rise for a further three years, rather than fall as implied by the current forecast. But she appears unable to communicate this. Ironically, this rise in debt could be financed by issuing short term gilts, with lower interest rates, and so the question from Faisal Islam last night, although technically correct, was slightly misplaced. But rather than explain any of the financing options, she just looked at him blankly, unable to respond.

The other obvious clanger she dropped was in relation to how the Bank of England might react to her tax cuts. The fact that one economist had spoken in the lead up to the debate of the tax cuts possibly pushing rates up to 7% suggested that this issue was highly likely (inevitably) to be addressed last night. This should have allowed her formulate a strong response to the question, but again she failed to do this. So not only is she ignorant of the details of her plan, and unable to discuss how it would be funded, but she also fails to identify the obvious questions coming her way and respond accordingly.

Our next prime minister? A frightening thought.
Spot on. She doesn’t have a clue.

Unsurprisingly she's blamed the French for the Dover debacle and denied Brexit has anything to do with it at all. Apparently she's also going to ditch all EU law and she's slimming down the civil service who would have to work on British replacements. She's completely incoherent, I would go as far as to say deranged.

Clearly today's line - Mogg's blamed the French too.

I'm not sure she's deranged, I just think she gets programmed with what to say and doesn't understand what it actually means (or if she does and cares, it's just more 'promise the earth' Johnsonist tripe).
