Who should be the next leader of the Tory party?

We are all trussed up.
She will lose the next election, then we get Starmer. Hope he has thought of a few basic policies by then.
British politics is full of second raters.

Unsurprisingly she's blamed the French for the Dover debacle and denied Brexit has anything to do with it at all. Apparently she's also going to ditch all EU law and she's slimming down the civil service who would have to work on British replacements. She's completely incoherent, I would go as far as to say deranged.

Thanks mate. Fairly standard fare then. But she’s been quiet on NI protocol and our relationship with EU itself? Obviously with Mogg in her corner you’d expect a continuation of hostilities but being quiet might offer some hope that we can rub along slightly better, although I suspect that she’s burying any serious talk of it as she isn’t on solid ground when talking about Brexit given her history and sees it as a weak point. Has Sunak said much on it?

She's fully on board with fixing the NI protocol by passing the legislation that breaks Johnson's agreement with the EU that changed from being a great deal to a terrible one almost overnight, so things aren't looking too good there either.

It looks as though Liz's policy announced yesterday of having Regional public sector pay boards has already been reversed.

Liz Truss continues bold ‘continuity Boris’ pitch with ill-considered policy announcement followed by immediate u-turn’ @FT

She’s not trying to appeal to the masses, just enough grass root Tories to get in. She’d tell you she’d burn foreigners at the stake if she thinks that’s what will giver her power. She’s saying what she thinks folk want to hear. As Marx said, these are my principles and if you don’t like them I have others.

I’m not a fan of hers at all but she’s smarter than you’re giving her credit for - what is everyone talking about today? Truss’s comments and her policies… not what Sunak said or his policies - she is dominating the media. She’s showing herself to be a bruiser as well.

No, a leader, a potential PM does not make those comments about Sturgeon or Scotland period. There is a line, and if that person cannot judge where that line is then they should be disqualified from running for office.

This isn’t about appealing to a narrow or specific electorate or showing she is a bruiser, you can do that and still know where the line is. That Truss doesn’t means she is unfit.

As for everyone is talking about her policies, well yes, if announcing absolute bollocks and then backtracking 24 hours later is the sort of qualities we want for PM then she is doing really well.

I suggest you look at Labour's previous manifesto as a guide and their new manifesto when it's published at the appropriate time in the run up to the next election. Accusing him of not having policies now that he can't hope to implement until after an election is a bit pointless.

No, disagree. Policy development is a long term proposition. We have seen today what happens when you make policy on the hoof.
Policy needs to be sold at all levels both within and without a party. We have seen today a rebellion in the Tory party and the threat of a major strike.
Nobody expects detailed policy too far in advance but the driving principle behind it must be agreed ahead. Example: the idea that public servants should be paid less in the regions should have been aired at least a year ago if a significantly large number in the party believed it was a goer. Its nonsense would have been revealed. I am talking ideally here as if there were no leadership contest. Detailed policy like that should not form part of a leadership contest.
Starmer has had ample time to set the principles out, but has failed to do so.
Does he believe we should increase taxes? If not, what does he think public debt levels are ok? What is his position vis a vis EU/UK trade difficulties? What is his view of our response to China’s activities in the sea? Does he have a view on anti radicalisation policy? We heard him recently talking nonsense about trans gender policy: “nobody should say that only women have a cervix” which illustrates his lack of thinking about a major scandal. So air his serious principles, please.
