I know Stoke City were formed in 1863 and are the oldest club in the Prem. But they didn't have City in their name until 1928.

I know that we are the only "City" to have won a league title! But were we the first "City"?

I think so, at least in terms of current league clubs, unless Gary James has other info.

1894 - Manchester City
1897 - Bristol City
1898 - Coventry City

those seem to be the first 3 major clubs to have adopted the "City" name.

Ta mate!

Aye, maybe Gary will come up with another, maybe he'll know of a red herring (like there being a Leeds City who are now defunct but they were before 1894).

Aye looks like they were 1884. But can't find that much info on them.

Well I did say "current league clubs"! ;-)

According to the mcfc-stats website we played them in 1892/93 season as Lincoln City so it seems they were the first.

As has been said.... we covered this a few weeks ago and it's Lincoln City (in the League).
