Pointless I know, but dont let it get to you, whats more important is how shit Given is.

or why they put gherkins on the burgers. they would save millions each year worldwide if they made them an optional extra.
What's with the hating on gherkins (pickles)? It's not a burger without them.

I was told the gherkins are put in cos they help to soak up some of the excess burger fat. You get 1 pickle per piece of regular size meat on the burger, 2 if it's a quarter pounder.

Think the question should really be 'Why do they have McDonalds?'
Seriously, it's absolute soggy shite. Have they EVER produced anything that looks like the pics they use to advertise? No way.....would have to be on the edge of total malnutrition before I would eat that crap in there, lol.

Remember the first one opening in London (Oxford St?) Looked forward to trying a 'real' American burger after our Wimpey's attempts to copy them.....I couldn't beleive for a minute that this was the stuff they really served in the States, till I went there.....it is! That's the real puzzle, if you have ever been in a traditional American diner and had a proper burger, then you know that McDonalds is nothing like in the slightest.....so how do the Yanks put up with Mc's attempts?? Baffling....

Rant over.. : )

I have no idea at all whether this is true or not, but it's a belting piece of recieved wisdom nontheless.

I was once told that because of the burger ingredients, including masses of fat, sugar and salt, it should be classed as a cake or confection product. The pickled gherkin, as a vegtable item ingredient, prevents this, and thus prevents VAT being chargeable on top of the price, and obviously a pr disaster for Ronald, too.

Thinking about it, this is possibly just about mad enough to be true, in the US, and global homogenisation means now we all get the gherkin.

Oh and gherkins are easier to take off rather than spending a couple of minutes making one with them. And there needed on a Big Mac or it would have so much sugar it would be classed as a desert :)
