If we get as far as Arsenal in the Champions League and as far as Aston Villa in domestic cup competitions, we could be playing at least 24 extra games next season...12 CL...6 FA Cup...6 CC. More if we get further, so why not play Joe Hart in all the cups and Shay Given in all the league matches? We will then have a world class goalie available should either get injured or lose form. It would certainly help me sleep easier at night.

And what is going to happen when we play a more possession style football?!?

Shay Given is shocking with the ball at his feet. Absolutely atrocious. He can't play the ball even if his life depended on it, and constantly give away possession with awful balls. In today's game, we need to realize this, and Given is the worst of the worst in that regard.

What do you think?

This.

more importantly, how many of our players are geared up to play Champions League Football? I would guess at Tevez,Adebayor,Zab,2 keepers, our England players, anyone else?

I have said it before Hart and Given share the same fault / short comings

Neither control their area

we need a comanding keeper who comes off his line and takes the ball early
imho

I'd do it the other way round if anything. We all know that Given's main flaws are coming for crosses and distribution, and in my opinion these two things, especially the crosses bit, are crucial for Premiership keepers. I believe having the ability to come for crosses is more important than being a good shot stopper in the Premiership.

However, in Europe there aren't as many teams that just look to hoof the ball into the box. So, I'd play Hart in the league but Given in the cups if you were going to do it that way. Personally I'd let Joe go on loan again with a clause saying we can recall him if Given gets injured though.

Has Hart stopped doing that? I haven't seen him at Birmingham much to be honest - only MOTD - so maybe he's changed.

But when he played for us one of his biggest faults was he ALWAYS came out to try to claim the ball, even when he had no chance. I found myself just wishing he'd stay on his line occassionally.

I would have said he and Shay were opposites in this regard.

ok edit my post to read

"neither effectively control their area"

Hart is in the England squad. He won't leave Brum for anywhere he wasn't guaranteed 1at team football.

Need both Hart and Given next season if our plans go as we wish, playing in 4 competitions and planning success, we need quality in all positions and decent back-up. Just look at Chelsea when there no 1 goalie was out. Hart and Given would give us the best pair of goalies in the Premiership.

I think the goalie position is one that could be maintained for every game during a season, bar injury, since they do the least amount of running of all players on the pitch.

however, if Manciti wanted to bring Joe back he might use the extra games in such as a way as you suggest above, no matter who was our regular first choice keeper for league matches.
