Why I love SWP

So I thought in the interest of having a nice positive thread I'd try to get a little SWP love in going.

I love the man because he's as tall as I am number one. Yes...that matters :) . And because no one else works harder or cares more then he does every time he's on the field. Whenever he's out there I feel no matter the situation he can make something happen just from his workrate alone.

So why do you love SWP?
 
......apart from being a city legend, which goes without saying.
he resigned for city on my 18th birthday this year 28th august.
i was getting my first city tattoo done, i get a text saying weve resigned shaunny, nearly jumped out the chair and fucked my city tat up.... anyway to sum.

I just remembered another reason I love the guy. When I first moved to Manchester I was watching an England match on TV. This was shortly after I became an official City fan. SWP came into the game and I had no idea who he was or that he had played for City. And I watched him play that game and he instantly became my favorite player. I leaned over to tell my wife about this amazing guy running around the field like a mad man making things happen and she tells me, oh yeah he's great. Played at city since he was a kid. You lot let him go though now he's with Chelsea...just gutted but it strangely helped confirm for me that I'd definitely chosen my perfect football team. Just had to add that little story.
 
Will always be a legend, but based on performances this season, he's not good enough for us. Put it this way, if we finish 4th, qualify for the group stages and end up with the likes of Barca or Real in our group, do you think we would do better with SWP or a better replacement? Its the latter for me everytime. As I say, he will hold legend status with the club but for where we want to be next season, he isn't good enough.
 
we all love swp but somethings not quite right with him at the mo, seems to have lost his extra yard of pace and the ability to beat a man down the flanks. final ball was never his strongest and his goals have dried up .

maybe the bile spouted by his old man on talkshite has turned his head and his confidence . He will always be a true blue but maybe a bit part player in future?
 
I'm an SWP fan too , there's fewer finer sights than whaen he's on form ....

i just feel that he's lost his way a bit though for one reason or another , and he has a nasty habit of listening to his step-daddy a bit too much too ...... it could be soon that SWP , if only for the sake of his England career , will feel he has to move on ........ i do hope i'm wrong though.
 
Lost alot of confidence, but the guy has had 25 appearences this season so it's not as if he has been "Dropped" he just needs to show us again what he is capable of, and we all know on his day what he can do. The thing is the way this forum goes, he only needs 1 really good performance before everybody is making the SWP love threads.
 
I have to agree with a few of the other posters here who say Shaun's days as a City player are numbered. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but admiration for what he's done in a City shirt; I cried tears of joy the day he re-signed and jumped all over the furniture when he netted two against Sunderland, but I can't see him being anything other than a peripheral figure now AJ's in the team.

Anyway, the reason I love SWP more than anything else was for his stunning performance in the FA Cup replay against Spuds at White Hart Lane in 2004. He did not stop for 90 minutes and scored a sublime equaliser.

As a result, I've cut him a lot of slack since, but that particular glory day was a long time ago. Sorry Shaun.

he never requested a transfer from city, he was sold at a over inflated price at a time when we had no money.

alot of great memories from SWP, them 2 at wolves, the 4th in the first derby at coms, the equaliser in the 4-3 at spurs.
 
Apologies, of course it's Shaun ... duly corrected.

I guess I always thought he was a player that was going to develop into a bigger and better talent than he has. I don't think he improved whilst at Chelsea and aside from a brief honeymoon period when he returned, I don't think he's done much for us since. Sure he can run at people, but I think the most important ability of any winger is to deliver telling crosses into the box. Shaun just doesn't seem able to do that with any consistency.

I wish I was wrong and I hope he proves me so before too long.

I agree with most of that mate.

The thing is, Shaun will never be the finished article - his overall play is too erratic and sometimes haphazard.....but thats what makes him the player he is (it, in a strange way, brings out his strengths) and why I love him so much.
His career and development stalled at Chelsea because Mourinho was determined to rein in the unpredictable elements to both his and Joe Cole's game. Cole adapted better. Shaun did not.
You could tell when he returned home to us he revelled in being able to play freely once more. He could make mistakes and not fear being benched for a month.
As for his crossing....yup it will never be consistent. Although I do like how he's learnt to minimize this by drilling the ball hard and low (and often behind the centre backs for a midfielder making a run into the box) rather than floating it up harmlessly to the keeper or hopelessly beyond the melee of players.
His shooting used to be incredibly wayward early in his career but he sorted that out under Keegan. But his crossing will always be suspect.
 
1) Despite his recent form, he's still a City legend.
2) He scored THAT goal against United.
3) He's gotten us some points this season with some of his goals.
4) He scored a great goal in the UEFA Cup last season.
5) He still puts his all in, despite not being the player he was.
