Why no substitutions?

I realize City won and I couldn't be happier but I still can't wrap my head around the fact that no changes were made in the first 94 minutes. City were ahead and there were players out there who were obviously running on fumes. What manager (other than MP) wouldn't get off the tired legs and bring on some guys to protect that lead?

I'm honestly baffled by Pellegrini.

To be fair to him, I wouldn't know what subs to make.

Fernandinho and Fernando was playing great
You cant take off Yaya in situations like that
If Sterling goes off that would mean Silva goes left and that could expose Clichy with Clyne getting forward as well
Silva was being quite influential on the break finding Aguero
Aguero is Aguero
Defense was solid for the most part.

Thought the subs were timed perfectly tbh. He changed the whole right side (introducing the pace of navas to combine with Zaba) on the potential exhaustion of Liverpool. Meanwhile Liverpool had used all their 3 subs so players like Sturridge who 'couldn't walk' according to his manager couldn't come off for benteke etc.

I agree that its hard to judge in that situation but MP has history of not altering things unless we are losing.

Personally think that as soon as Sterling missed that sitter, Navas should have been introduced.

Sterling, who i thought played well up to that point, after that chance his head went, wasn't the same player.

Navas would have worked hard and pushed back their full back.

We should have made subs earlier as we were getting deeper and deeper as time wore on.
Had he changed things between 65 and 70 minutes we might have held on but there's no guarantee.

It was the proverbial stick or twist situation. I imagine he saw the chances we were creating and how little we were giving away and didn't want to risk upsetting our flow. Had we got our well deserved second (or third/fourth and fifth!!!) then we would have seen changes.

Didnt Pellegrini say post match it was because of half the bench coming back from injuries? Sagna, Mangala, Bony, Navas that he didnt want to force them in earlier than needed. Unless I've completly made that up..

I also agree with Benjani up top. What would you have changed earlier. Everything was working for us and we were clearly making the better opportunities as it was.

I'm baffled that you're baffled by a manager who's just won us a trophy. Jesus Christ.

I'm honestly baffled why you are baffled.
I suggest he knows a damn site more than you about the game, the state of the players and what he wants to do, and I'm based on that by the fact he's now won us three trophies whilst you are hardly a level headed sort when it comes to City

Agree.
I was giving people nearby ear damage screaming at Pellegrini to fetch Navas on about 15 mins from the end of normal time
as he is the ideal man to give tired defenders the runaround. Dragging them wide and into the corners, winning throws and corners. Also terrier like when getting the ball back.

Who could he take off when Yaya, Aguero etc might be needed for pens? Maybe Sterling. Liverpool were pressing in the last 20 mins

Pellegrini explained it-it was hard for him to make changes when the players were coming back from injuries. Perhaps people need to have a little more faith.

Pellegrini was getting dogs abuse where I was for his starting XI, tactics and the lack of substitutions but I’m not sure what changes could have been made. Navas for Toure after 70 minutes might have been an option but you’re taking a lot of passing and vision out of the team. The system worked and the number of chances we created in the second half vindicated his approach. The point about leaving Sterling on to get in front of Clyne is a good one – I didn’t clock it at the time, having been left somewhat distraught by his 6 yard miss.

I did think at the time we could do with a change but the obvious canidiates were Silva or Yaya and they are big game players. Yaya was doing ok so on balance he got it right.
