can anybody tell me why the goalkeepers feel it neccessary to scream "AWAY, AWAY "
when a corner comes over .
bear in mind these are proffessional footballers !!
do the defenders not know to hoof it away ??
it would get right on my tits if i was a defender

Are they shouting for them to hoof it 'away'? They could be shouting 'away' to the back players so that if the ball gets knocked back in the opposition forwards are offside.

/may have watched too much Arsenal late 80s blog

Probably cos defenders have to stay sharp when balls are crossed in and a bit of a shout can keep them on their toes, a bit of a kick up the arse sort of thing

fully agree. one of the main reasons why shay is better than joe hart is his communication with defenders and command of his area...

You are under the illusion that multi-million pound sports stars who are paid thousands upon thousands of pounds a week are able to concentrate on a job for 45 minutes at a time. It's a common misconception, so you are not alone.

Exactly. It's easy to lose concentration and start ball watching, so they need a kick up the arse to remind them to push up. And it's also about doing it in unison. If they were left to their own devices, the offside trap would fail miserably.

They're only human

Good point.

It's done as a battle cry, in the hope of giving our players that extra inch in their jump and to put the opposing players off.

to me its a bit like bein told repeatedly where the sweeping brush is kept
every time i need to use it !!!
metaphorically speaking of course
