Wifi At Etihad Stadium

I can remember when 'wireless' at the stadium meant some miserable old bugger with a flat cap and a transistor radio clasped to the side if his head, mournfully telling people stood around him on the Kippax that 'bloody United have scored'....

BB doesn't bother me, I can live without shopping on Amazon or watching a video on YouPorn for 90mins.....

The problem is the Mobile Phone.... missing calls and texts whilst around the area, sending texts and them not being received for days.

The Sheikhs next signing: a mobile satellite on the roof of the CityShop.

Why not just join 'Free Public WIFI'?

It's not locked down, and judging by the name, I'd say it was free to the public.

It doesn't give an IP.

And, for those like me who don't have a special phone, but do have an Ipod it would be nice if I could get internet access before the game and at half time. Considering I usually get to the game an hour and a half early. As well as the ability to check scores and post on here if we feel like it.

It can't be too difficult, and people saying 50k at the same time, can you honestly see even half of those trying to connect to it? Especially considering half are over 50 and refuse to press "ok" on a computer.

I know it's only Blackburn, but I think if they can manage it. We should be able to as well, no?

Not something major really, very few clubs have titernet for the fans. Besides we're here to back the team and watch the game, if you need a score update just text some man u fan(bound to be at home).

No need for "sort it city" comments IMO

this definitely needs sorting.

Agreed - it's crap!

The Etihad is a smart phone/3G black hole.

I've had a few "exchanges" with Richard Ayers about this...who said it was a "priority for the IT director" about 6 weeks ago, then tow weeks ago when still nothing had happened, he said "turns out there are tricky choices" - whatever that means!

I guess doing without internet access, as disappointing as that is, is one thing, but as the previous poster said to be basically cut off from phone/SMS messages is at least inconvenient, but could be dangerous in certain circumstances...

Bumped into Garry Cook at an Academy game around about November 2010 and had a chat with him about things, one being the possibility of fan wi-fi access at the ground, he commented that they hoped within 18 months to be able to offer access and services so that you can watch replays of the live game on your smart phone

I don't think its possible, judging on the people around me at the ground and their usage, probably half the people in the ground go on their phones. Lets play it safe even with 5,000 people using the WIFI at one time would still be impossible bandwith. Imagine 5,000 people all rolling up and using the WIFI at your house, it's impossible.

The mobile networks themselves obviously have proven it's impossible because like now, they cannot cope with the amount of data. Data used is chargable by the provider especially in masses, the club isn't going to pay for thousands of pounds+ worth of data and offer Wifi out for free. They've probably just left it to the phone networks to sort out.
