Every time I leave the phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 mini if it matters) down for a couple of minutes i have to re-connect with the house wifi.
Until recently it just connected automatically when the mobile data was turned off.
Seems to be a problem with the phone as the tablet is still connecting correctly.
Any idea how to fix this?

A couple of things you can try:

As ColinLee has suggested make sure that the Wifi on your Phone is not hybernating when the screen turns off.
Open Settings
Tap on Wifi
Tap on Menu button
Tap on "Advanced"
Set "Keep Wifi on during sleep" to "Always"

or

Open Settings
Tap on Wifi
Tap on Menu button
Tap on "Advanced"
Turn off "Auto network switch"
You could have no connectivity issues with your router at all but some SAMSUNG's hate certain routers apparently, so it'll show as an 'unstable' connection.
What auto network switch does is turn off your Wifi when it detects a weak or unstable signal, and reverts back to data.

Hope either of these help?

If not try a good old Router re-boot, sometimes a refresh works wonders and clears out all the junk

Good Luck!
