Will the cruise industry ever recover?

For cruising to recover in the short term( 12 months) would be a miracle.
No one knows what financial realities will be, the public's confidence has been rocked on a scale only experienced before in war-time. Longer term depends on enough people having adequate disposable income to make the the cruise industry viable, and an oil industry capable of supplying the ships at the right price.
The general perception of the situation seems to be that yesterday's "normal" will
be "tomorrow's" normal, born out by previous catastrophes, the great depression,
the banking crash, but to me this is on a scale which is far greater.
I firmly believe that nobody can be certain of the future and that much greater
problems than holidays will need to be overcome first. Imo of course

There is a very specific problem with cruise ships. They are all or nothing. You either go for the whole thing or you don't and they have a fixed minimum cost to run the boat. I struggle to see the point where they can sell enough tickets to run profitably in the near future.

I don’t think the income concern will be the biggest as most cruise customers are retired with fixed incomes/outgoings and often lots of savings so the finance is there to pay. The bigger issue is the memory of people being stuck in cabins for 8 days or more at the start of this. I’m sure there will be some great offers around. When I watched the terror attacks in Tunisia and Sharm, I didn’t think anyone would return to those places again but they are back in business and Brits are going again. People have short memories. 2/3 years and it will be back to normal I think. There may be quite a lot of pent up demand in the older generation. Money to spend but life passing by with each month of lockdown!

Anyone want to have a guess when cruises will start again?

More specifically what are my chances of going on a cruise booked for 31 August going to the Canaries, Madeira and Portugal?

I reckon it’s about 50/50.
Absolutely no chance mate.
I have one booked in September, Vancouver, Alaska, Japan, but I know we won't be going.
Companies have laid of their staff.
Ships are being laid up. The world is closed.
They don't want to officially tell you it's off, cos if they did they'd have to refund your deposit, crafty cunts.

The cruise industry will come back but maybe sometime next year, it's a pisser as I love it, done over 20.

Same question applies to all inclusive holidays where everything is on site and you never leave the complex for two weeks. I took my kids on one once. They loved it. I fucking hated it and insisted we get a hire car and have a day out exploring. Officially the worst day of the holiday was their conclusion afterwards..........

Always thought cruises looked like hell on earth. Never got the appeal at all. Butlins on a boat.
