wired connection to wireless

Comrades, I am trying to move my desktop upstairs but as the phone line and socket are downstairs I need to go wireless, I have the router set up so that I can access the iphone anywhere in the house, but when i move the pooter upstairs the interwebby thing wont work....
how do I fix this?
(in small words that a technophobe will understand please)

Do you have wireless built in to your desktop or a dongle plugged in? I don't know what your knowledge level is so don't take the previous question as sarcastic BTW.

Edit:- is it not possible to run an extension cable upstairs?

If you have a wireless card you should see your router broadcasting the ssid (network name) so if you have sky it will show something like "sky76854" or similar.
Go to the bottom right of your screen and look at the icons for 5 white bars that get larger from left to right, click on that and then select and join the network and put in your wireless password, done.

If you can't see this then you need to see if as Colin says you have a wireless card on board.

Dont worry about my knowledge level, it is near to non-existant... I have a lead going from the router into the pc but to get the lead to go upstairs would be too much hassle, taking it through the hall, up the stairs and then across the landing before getting it across the room I am looking to move the computer too.
I would have thought that there must be an easy way to get the internet WAN to pick up upstairs

Do you actually have a little ariel sticking out of the back of the PC or say a USB wireless dongle plugged into it? Im going to guess the answer is no in which case you need a wireless adaptor plugged in (and a healthy signal).

However if it is a pc then you can get a chunky one as i doubt it will get knocked stuck in a rear facing usb.
This would defo negate any distance issues regarding connectivity but the micro is fine from what i have seen.
Less than a tenner as well.

That's a possibility but it really needs a good signal since the built in ariel is tiny.

You plug 1 into the mains socket near your router and connect via a short LAN cable (like the one you use downstairs) and the 2nd plug goes in the mains socket upstairs with a similar wire to your PC. It's actually then a wired connection over your mains wiring.

cheers lads, there is a wee ariel type thing but will have to have a look at where it connect to the pc, no white bars on the bottom of the screen sadly

If you have an aerial sticking out of the back you may just have to enable your wireless through settings.

Windows 8

1. Open Network and Sharing Center
2. Choose Change adapter settings on the Task pane
3. Right-click on Wi-Fi
4. Select Enable

Windows 7

1. Click on Start
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Click on Network and Internet
4. Click on Network and Sharing Center
5. Choose Change adapter settings on the Task pane
6. Right-click on Wireless Network Connection
7. Select Enable

Windows Vista

1. Click on Start

3. Click on Network and Sharing Center
4. Choose Manage network connections on the Task pane
5. Right-click on Wireless Network Connection
6. Select Enable
