Wireless Router/Modem

My router at home stopped working and as I was buying a new one online a member of our I. T department said I could have one of the works spare BT business hub, I have set this up and it works great when connected with the ethrenet cable but won't work wirelessly could this be because I am on talk talk and the router is a BT model or am I just being a dummy not knowing what I am doing, any help and suggestions would be really appreciated

When you say it won't work, can your PC/laptop "see" the router but not connect or can it just not see the wireless network? Are you sure it's a wireless router?

Sorry, it detects the router but think it says limited connectivity, i am at work now so cant see it

Windows vista by any chance???

If you plug in to the ethernet socket and google vista bt homehub fix you will get a thousand responses. There should be a microsoft fix for it. Download, install and wireless works.

I had loads of problems sorting my mates laptop until i stumbles across this.

I gotta Ps3 yesterday and want to use it to go online wirelessly

Now my computer has a modem connection but i been looking about how to get a wireless connection most of this morning.

From what i gather all you need is a router and a card adapter or something. the name Linksys has often cropped up as a decent router.

Any Wizards confirm is this right? You don't have to contact your internet provider or anything?

Can't be bothered if it's too complicated and a pain in the arse.

You need to buy a wireless router and if you want to have a wireless connection to your computer as well, it needs to have a wireless network card. You can buy wireless usb dongles that act as a card if you haven't got one which are ok for simple surfing.

You need to buy a wireless router and if you want to have a wireless connection to your computer as well, it needs to have a wireless network card. You can buy wireless usb dongles that act as a card if you haven't got one which are ok for simple surfing.

Might be a silly question (depending on your technical competence) but are you sure your present modem/router isn't wireless? There can't be many that aren't nowadays.
If not then your PC must be plugged into the modem/router in which case you just need to replace it with something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TD-...ctions/dp/B0031SUB4S/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top for £30 or for more functionality http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TD-...ctions/dp/B00B1NSB8S/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top for £75.

You simply unplug the line from your phone socket in the back of your present modem/router and put it in the new one (the same for your PC) so no need for wireless dongles for the PC (wired is always faster). You just need to run the included CD and you should be up and running.

Fair enough, although I've only received wireless ones for a good few years now.
Although that made me think about Super David Silva 21's circumstances if it's a relatively old modem he's using.

@Super David Silva 21, if you're not in any minimum term contract with your broadband supplier then have a look around for any deals in your area and at least give your present supplier a call using the information you've gathered as a bargaining chip. You should be able to get a better deal AND a nice new wireless modem/router thrown in.

Just to add my bit. Recently got a BT home hub as went over to fibre. If I've not used the computer for a bit and the screen has gone blank (hibernation) then, when I pick it up again, the wireless connection is still on but, while windows (Windows 7) shows the connection, I either get no internet or "limited access ". Disconnecting and reconnecting fixes this though. Is it to do with the way the home hub allocates. addresses to the things connected and the leases on those addresses.
