MONDAY 2ND JULY

BRAZIL VS MEXICO

Match kicks off at 15:00 (BST) on ITV 1.
Coverage starts at 14:30 (BST). Presentor, Pundits and Commentators tba.

Brazil come into this having topped their group, starting the tournament fairly unconvincing but growing into it as it’s gone along. They seem to have changed their style of play during the tournament, adopting a fairly pragmatic approach. A lot of neutrals will hope they try and open up in the knockout stages but I’m not expecting that. Coutinho has probably been their star player so far, Neymar nowhere near his best and Jesus has lacked service but is working hard. Jesus is expected to start again; Danilo may be back from injury, Fernandinho probably won’t play, Ederson is still 2nd choice.

Mexico were probably the 1st or 2nd best team in the tournament after the first 2 games but in the third game they fell apart, losing 3-0 to Sweden. They tried to play open attacking football and in the end were picked off against a more methodical Sweden side. They have gone from topping the group and potentially facing Switzerland in the last 16, to dropping down to 2nd and facing Brazil.

This will be a close game though, I expect Brazil to dominant and Mexico will look to do what they did to Germany.

Brazil’s goal scorers so far:
Coutinho (2), Neymar (1), Paulinho (1), Thiago Silva (1).

Mexico’s goal scorers so far:
Lozano (1), Vela (1), Hernandez (1),

Unlucky draw for Mexico. Brazil to win, likely easily, IMO.

It's 38 degrees in the ground, this is not going to be an end to end or high tempo game.

I think that suits Mexico, they'll treat it like the Germany game, sit back conserve energy for a counter.

Still no Fernandinho, who significantly improves the side when he plays instead of one of Casemiro or Paulinho, especially when playing against a side sitting back and looking to counter.

It's a mystery dinho can't get a game,at least that keeps him uninjured
It’s Tite, he plays his favourites even when it doesn’t necessarily make sense tactically.

I am very surprised Renato Augusto is not playing ahead of Coutinho. ;-)
