Worst Goalkeeper

Of course, Eric Nixon just knocked on City's door one evening, on his way home from work, and asked if he could have a trial / play. And we said "Yes".

Those were the days.

My memory must be going as I had forgotten some of these guys ever played for us. Didn't we swap David Phillips for Perry Suckling ? Phillips was a decent player and went on to win the cup with Coventry. Margetson gets my vote because of that disastrous display against QPR. Don't know if it's been mentioned but Margetson is now goalkeeping coach to the England national team which beggars belief.

There can't be many clubs over the years who have had more outfield replacement goalkeepers than City. MacDonald, Redmond, Quinn, Gleghorn and Walker all immediately spring to mind. All of whom were better than Immel & Suckling. Lol. Plus Harry Dowd was replaced during a game v Bury when I was a lad but I can't remember who went in goal.

Just remembered it was Matt Gray !!

I work with a Tranmere fan, and Nixon is his all time favourite player and a Tranmere legend by all accounts

he was ok ish, we paid 100k for him from motherwell, came with high hopes.
Considering Joe Corrigan didn't miss a single league game for 5 years, MacCrae must have been on a damn good wage considering he was still at City and was in the City documentary when Big Mal was fired around October 1980. Clearly playing in the reserves for 5 years straight proved no hardship to him.

Just checked the line ups of that season and you are correct, it was the only time we had a keeper on the bench all season (2 subs) which does seem strange.
I suspect if you'd seen him in training and, for some reason, you were going to pick him you'd probably want insurance on the bench.
The QPR game still gives me shivers as both goals were abysmal from him, but the back pass free kick was even worse and doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Good shout out for Tommy Wright who was built like a brick shit house with all the agility of a brick shit house.
