'Wow' Moments in Video Games

Not really played games for years now, so I've missed out on all the COD/Last Of Us etc hype.

However, harking back to my youth, I fondly remember the demos for Driver and Rollcage, and couldn't wait for them to be released. Rollcage was a very nice spin on the racing genre, and Driver gave us a taste of things to come with the GTA franchise, despite being unable to leave the car! Being able to record your police chases and edit them into a short film with differing camera angles and slow-mo was pretty cool.

GTA3 was stunning. Just anything a gamer could ever want. So atmospheric, it was always fun to run the gauntlet through the Triad areas of the city.

Metal Gear Solid. Looking back now, its gameplay quirks seems pretty basic, but at the time the fact you could fool guards with footprints in the snow was ahead of its time!

Special mention for, I think, Gran Turismo 2....might have been 3. Loved winning $$$ in races and ploughing it into new cars/souping up existing motors. I suppose for me, the real wow factor in that game was the day I decided to have a bash at one of the long endurance races, one that took 12 hours to complete and you couldn't save the game and come back to it. About 2 hours in, my mind was thinking 'wow, why the fuck have I started this?!'.

Oh, and Demolition Derby :)

Gran Turismo 3 A Spec on PS2 I think that was

I remember doing 1 of those endurance races myself and the circuit on my slim line PS2 had melted inside!

- Seeing Rapture for the first time in Bioshock
- Coming out of the train station and seeing City 17 in Half Life 2
- Pretty much every battle in Shadow of the Colossus
- The twist in Knights of the Old Republic
- Coming across a Super Star Destroyer in the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games
- Seeing how many leagues/teams there were in Sensible World of Soccer

This was such a massive leap forward at the time. I spent many sleepless nights trying to get that elite status... Never achieved it!
