Wynn Davies

Think we signed him from Newcastle where he wore the legendary No 9 shirt. He was a great header of the ball.

Lived not far from Franny. I think he stayed a couple of seasons with us before going over to the dark side.

I think the rags signed him as cover mainly. He moved on after a season with them and played down a division or two towards the end of his career.

Wyn Davies was indeed signed from Newcastle although City missed the chance of getting the best years out of him by failing to sign him from Bolton. He later said that he'd have preferred to sign for City then. He soon became surplus to requirements at City and was turned 30 went he went to a rapidly declining rag outfit. He was probably the best header of the ball I've ever seen and he attepted to head everything. He was the only player I ever saw having a free kick given against him for dangerous heading. It was against Spurs at Maine Road and he dived in among flying boots when the ball was barely above grass height. It was vaguely comical but still a ridiculous decision by the referee.

I liked Wyn, he was a very good foil for Frannie Lee in the 71/72 season when we should really have won the title. The following season we got off to a poor start and I don't know if Allison blamed Davies for it (he did have a knack of off-loading players on a whim) but he was sold to the rags a few weeks into the season.

Remember him scoring for Newcastle in the 89th minute against city at st James park the year after we won the league, walked out of that ground and witnessed the must violent scenes ever outside a stadium, so I was pissed off twice
