Yaya Toure - 2016/17 performances

Whether it's due to a lack of effort, a lack of legs, or just that he's simply not very good at it, it is detrimental to the team when a central midfielder doesn't track runners off the back of them.

To be honest, even at his incredible peak this was a problem. I remember Didi Hamann saying Yaya was a liability and he got slaughtered for saying it. That season he scored 20 goals from midfield so the idea that he was a liability was ludicrous. Those 20 goals won us the league.

The problem is, teams have figured him out now. Teams deliberately target him, try to outnumber him in the middle and run off the back of him safe in the knowledge he's not going to track them.

His quality on the ball has never been in question. Neither has ability to score goals. He's a supremely talented footballer and against cannon fodder I think he's so good on the ball that we'll be able to get away with his short-comings off the ball. But against a decent side in a competitive game where we need to press to win the ball back, I just don't see him fitting in.

The second half against Barca as an example, is the best I've ever seen City play. The front 5 were all pressing so high, so quickly, so aggressively that we played Barca at their own game and beat them convincingly. I don't think we could have done that if Yaya had been one of those 5 players.

But against Swansea, Sunderland, Hull etc, he's so good on the ball that they won't be able to live with him.

It's great to have another option in midfield and I'm sure he'll chip in with some vital goals. But people expecting Yaya to come back in and play regularly and dominate games like he did 3 or 4 years ago, I just don't see it.

It's a fair post that and like you say I can't see him starting against Chelsea or Arsenal for example but it is great to have him as an option and back in the squad.

He won us that match today no question.

I like to remember Yaya as the man who has been pivotal in everything we have won. Even in a poor season last season he had a good game in the league cup final.

He is experienced, can pass the ball, can keep possession and can score. He would have been a great option to bring on with 5 to go against Boro.

This will be his last season but if we can get 5/6 games like today out of him then it's big bonus for me.

Spot on

So chuff d to see Yaya back . Don't expect I'm to be a guaranteed starter but what a great weapon he is to have back in your armoury.

Even if he never plays again at least he'll now have had a proper send off fit for an all time city legend

I feel like if we want this title (we do) then just having the option of playing Touré is a massive boost.

Did the haters have a little bit of sick in their throats as they cheered the goals ?

Shit comment. Yaya acted like a ****. He's come back and scored and won us a game. It doesn't change the fact that he acted like a ****.
I suspect his critics cheered as loudly as any other City fan(I know I did), because they are City fans and not Yaya fans.

well said , made me sad at the time thinking I would never see him in a blue shirt again , now he can leave with his head held a little higher , is and will remain a legend for the club

He's a shoo-in for Clubman of the Year!
:-)
I'm not sure if he hasn't found his redemption, solely so as to facilitate a move in January but, as someone said already, it's only right that he should have a day like today. He's been hugely instrumental in getting us onto the platform we are now at and, whilst part of ne would be delighted to see him continue in such form at City, the realist on my other shoulder, is adamant that any half decent offer in the January window should be seized upon.

I hope his goals doesn't make Pep play him too often because at the end of the day, for me, he is still a liability. For the break that led to Wickham's goal, he didn't track back. He was strolling upfield.

He's still the same old lethargic Yaya. Sure he has quality, but I can't wait for us to sell him.

I think you will find convergence at the point of danger/ weakness, the name of the game, for Pep. If Yaya is at the the apex of the attack and the counter strikes through the middle, he cannot be there at the same time. This is why our full back, as well as Fern converge to the point of danger. Yaya also did this when in suitable position as did Sergio, KdB and everyone else.

Maybe it's you guys that should watch the game instead of trying to pick out fault for the man's first game of the season!!

ALL THE OUTFIELD PLAYERS CELEBRATED YAYA'S GOALS!!

Does that not say anything to you?? Do you think they thought he worked as well as they did or are finding fault in the manager's selection??

*smh*

Unbelievable...

Read this post 3 or 4 times now and I still can't make head nor tail of it. I think either you've quoted me in error and you meant to quote someone else, or you were pissed out of your head when you made it ;-)

Convergence at the point of danger?! What the fuck? It sounds like a Chuck Norris straight to video film from the 80s. Don't really know what you're on about.

I'm not sure if you watched the game, but Yaya wasn't playing at the apex of the attack. He was playing as one of two central midfielders alongside Fernandinho with DeBruyne in front of him and Aguero in front of him. He was nowhere near the apex of the attack.

I did watch the game and as I said he won it for us! His quality and his eye for goal was the difference between the two sides. He's a match winner and often steps up in decisive moments. He's one of my favourite City players ever and has been instrumental to our success.

THAT'S GREAT THAT ALL OF THE OUTFIELD PLAYERS CELEBRATED HIS GOALS, I CAN'T REMEMBER SUGGESTING THEY DIDN'T? I'M REALLY HAPPY FOR HIM, HE DESERVED PRAISING BECAUSE HE WON US THE GAME.

The point I was making about him being a liability defensively was aimed at a poster who came on and criticised Silva because he's not scored decisive goals like Yaya has. If you read back through the thread you'll see that. I was merely pointing out that while Yaya can be a match winner he can also be a liability defensively.

Talking of Pep, he demands control of midfield and today was the least control our midfield has had of a game all season. We looked vulnerable when we didn't have the ball and I personally think a big part of that was because of Yaya's lack of mobility. I appreciate it's his first game back and he needs time to get back up to speed, but even at his collossal peak he wasn't the best going backwards, he was just so good going forwards that it didn't matter. He's declined further going backwards but clearly still has the quality going forwards.

It's up to Pep to decide if on balance he is worth the risk. I trust Pep on this one and don't expect Yaya to play against any of he top 6 barring an injury crisis.

Yes, but no more than De Bruyne and not much more than Silva.
As others have said, he's a City great (the greatest in my opinion) and it's wonderful that his farewell will not be 10 months rotting away from the pitch. He has 6-10 cameos in him to allow us to rest players.

I noticed that too, but he still has quality on the ball. We can use him at times

He's a luxury player always has been. Mancini used De Jong to free him up to score goals and make things happen higher up the pitch. in 13/14 we simply outscored teams.

That's where I don't think you can carry him in a Guardiola team because he doesn't press and work hard enough off the ball. On the ball he's a perfect Guardiola player. He'll have his uses because he played yesterday because Gundogan was knackered and he won us the game. He'll be a good sub to bring on to either help keep possession or try and find a goal.

Toure started a CL final for Pep as a centre back. You don't need to track back as much there.

Excellent as the top player in a diamond today. Glad Pep accepted his apology and ignored his agent. the perfect position for him as his defending is toss.
