I went to Colchester and had to miss my best mate's stag do, which I wasn't best pleased about. I met a bloke called Vic from Sky at about this time, who was interested to know what a few of us thought about PPV. We gave it him with both barrels and he went back to London under no misapprehensions. It was only later that I found out Vic Wakeling was the MD of Sky Sports!
It seems you've always been sticking it to the man, BTH ;-)

You take your opportunities wherever you find 'em. He was a pleasant enough bloke and got the beer in, to be fair!
Classic arch-Capitalist move, buying a drink and being affable. I'm surprised you fell for it. I hear Gideon is especially adept at this tried and tested tactic. ;-)

I got tickets in the York end, down the side opposite the dug outs.... half of it was City fans!

To be honest, the real game was Northampton away, we had something like 850 tickets, the smallest allocation in the league.
I was there (in the Northampton end)

And I was there for that as well, I drove the mini bus !! Keep them coming so I can boast some more.

i never went to that game, but belive me as ive gone to chesterfield, doncaster, halifax and shrewsbury. and other shit games as derby away lost 6-0

does anyone remember the streaker at the begining of the second half who tripped over the large wall and smashed his head open on the gravel around the edge of the pitch, he obviously failed in his attempt but it was funny as fuck seeing him led back through the stand bollock naked, claret pouring from his head with a st johns ambulance man assisting him, people were still coming back from the bar thinking what the fuck has just gone on!

oh memories of when going to the match was funny as fuck

I remember that game for a few reasons

1: one of the leve blues got thrown out twice and got back in think he did three of the four stands that day

2: remember fans trying to watch from the grass banks around the stadium

3: I'm sure that was the day when Dickov scored he spotted blackie and myself and ran straight towards us to celebrate the goal

I remember laughing at the score while sat in the Stretford End. How times change

'York Away' is not the seminal (Highly influential in an original way; constituting or providing a basis for further development: a seminal idea in the creation of a new theory) game its cracked up to be.
Wycombe away when we got beat 1-0 was the lowest of the low.
'York Away' is mostly discussed by people on here who were not there.
Hence it is more mythical than anything else.

The game we should talk about that had the biggest influence on our future destiny was Stoke at home. I can't remember the exact date or details - however, I think it was around Christmas time, maybe boxing day? I'm not sure.
we were either 2-0 or 3-0 down at half time. When the team came out for the second half something very special between the players and the supporters at that game happend. The fans got behind behind the team. The team responded and we either drew or won - (its all to hazy and I have been drinking lots of white wine!). But is was from that very game we then went on a run that resulted in promotion. That day the players, the team, the fans became one. I remember the atmostphere on the Kippax that day - it was genuinely fantastic.
'York Away' - don't believe the hype!

TGR. you are missing the point about York Away and it has nothing to do with Semen. The match with Stoke is about us turning it around as fans and players whereas York is seen as the lowest point in our history. We were shit, I remember the guy that scored their winner hadn't scored for about 42 years. That's how bad we were. I did go to York and my mate who had like me, done every away game before it, just lost the plot, he made a vow not to go to another away game that season and he kept to it. He just couldn't take the pain and misery anymore. York away is about humilaition and suffering. Forget the bollocks that is written about the great away days we had in that division, they were shit and only made bearable by booze and funny cigarettes. Some have mentioned Wycombe away as being a low point but York is the one, the despair on the terraces and the total lack of hope was there for all to see. I walked out there into their supporters club and drowned my sorrows, I didn't want to get on the coach, go home or anything and I had my 2 young sons with me. The poor sods should have reported me to the NSPCC for drunken cruelty !! Thank who ever we were on a coach otherwise I dont think I would have got home in time to take them to Wrexham on Boxing day !

NOPE, i didn't go either, missed a few aways that season due to limited allocations, and when fixtures came out and i looked at the chrstmas matches, wrexham away, being a chester lad who in the eighties was on first name terms with the magistrates in wrexscum i didn't think it would be wise for me to go, so in the summer i booked a flight to australia for the ashes and had a month there in the sun, left after bristol rovers at home a dire 0-0, and thought i made a good decision. happy days

No. but I went to most of the Home games that season including watching the play-off semi away on the big screen at Maine Road. I did visit York in the mid 80's to watch Altringham in the FA Cup.

How has this thread reached 11 pages and spelling Altrincham with a 'g' has not been picked up on. We clearly don't have enough fans on the poncy side of the city.

The mythical and magical York away game...... Conned my wife that we were going to York races for the weekend. So far , so good, despite there being no racing on. Booked the hotel by the course, but when she saw 20 blokes dressed in City tracksuits at breakfast i.e. the players, the game was up.

If you'd been at that breakfast you would have gone straight to the bookies and put your house on York.

I read about Wycombe, away, mentioned earlier. Now that was a shambles. Middle of nowhere. Midweek, as well.

The list goes on, but I remember going to Gigg Lane for a cup game in about '72 with a cracking team that was winning for fun. Not that night. Wiped off the floor by Bury. I might be wrong , but I'm sure the game was abandoned after City fans piled on thinking they could have the game played again. Fire engines appearing, after one stand looked like it might be set on fire. Happy days. Bring back shite football.

It was the game that finally prompted the "something must be done" outcry. Royle bought Andy Morrison. The season turned round. That's why it's a pivotal point.

Did the Bournemouth away, ten minutes from where i live, and also did the Colchester on PPV,£8 fuckin quid..Outrageous!
Fuck! Forgot about the pay per view game. The first club anywhere (along with Colchester obvs) to have a PPV game? They knew how to take the piss out of us.

I personally don't think this season was the lowest of the low (in regards to morale not stats). The season before was worse as those cunts got us into the position of being in the third tier of English football. From the Stoke game onwards I just enjoyed the ride, with the exception of Wycombe doing the double over us and not getting tickets to Springfield park for the 1st Leg then having to watch it on what looked like a 14inch telly in the middle of the pitch.

Poncy? You obviously don`t live in, or have never been to Alty?
& yes, myself & 6 others were at York away. The only other person, apart from the 7 of us, i can categorically state was definitely there was Daft Donald, who was standing next to me. I can also remember (just) having an absolutely storming night out.

Born and raised in Timperley and went to school in Alty but live in that London now! The poncy bit was my own attempt at humour as you will be aware most of Alty is big rag country and you don't tend to see many Blues round there, my old man (a rag) derides City as a North and East Manchester club!

Truly a pathetic screen it was indeed surrounded by some black kind of border effort to mask its tinyness (is that a word?)
