The world wide web was only adopted as a standard by everybody because it was free and unrestricted. Before this, communities were much more gated, like AOL used to be, and used whatever protocol they wanted.

That's the kicker about technology in computing. If you invent a new protocol and patent it, nobody will use it and you'll make no money. If you don't patent it, you make no money.

Computing is a pretty level playing field which is why there are so many rags to riches stories. Programmers cannot stand licensing restrictions and they'll reinvent the wheel to get around them.

Yeah I can agree with that. I'll fire off an email to Tim and see what he thinks about copyrighting WWW.
