I was cycling round there a couple of Summers back. There's loads of stuff named after the poor bastards who copped for it. John Frost Bridge, to name one. As is most of Holland there's not a stick cover - wide open spaces just built for Panzers as long as the bridges are intact. But reading around it later on it seems that there was an attempt to pin the whole fiasco on some Polish geezer. Seems par for course where top brass are concerned.A double-bill of war films starting on the TCM HD channel this morning.
10:20 - Where Eagles Dare (1969)
Allied commandos are sent to rescue an American general from a Nazi fortress.
13:30 - A Bridge Too Far (1977)
An attempt to bring WWII to a rapid close ends in disastrous results.
Absolutely. a great ensemble film, Harry Andrews and Ian Bannen are excellent in it but it's Connery's film and one of Sidney Lumet's best.Is that the one with a young Sean Connery ? If so a brilliant film.
