In no particular order;

Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Robert Fripp
J.Mascis
Scotty Moore
John McLaughlin
David Gilmour
Kevin Shields
Neil Young
Steve Howe
Johnny Marr
Robert Johnson
Thurston Moore.

Good call on Fripp and Howe. I saw Howe live years ago when I was still a teenager, just an amazing all around musician.

Agreed.

Tends to get beaten with the "prog rock" stick,(not that there's anything wrong with prog),but i've seen him play acoustic and live blues,(and with Yes - ok I am that old),and technically one of the most complete guitarists around.
Had to put Thurston down - Sonic Youth in their heyday - awesome!

Some of early Yes is fantastic and paved the way for groups like Radiohead and Sigur Ros.....but they went a little overboard and became a little too self indulgent. I always thought Howe, Squire and Bruford we're cool guys with the best intentions. As for Anderson and Wakeman......they became laughing stocks. Especially after Wakeman's fucking ice capades tour he did. Spinal Tap material there.

Just off to Oakwell now - might listen to Topographic Oceans on the way.
Then again...!
