What time train are you catching mate? We`re leaving Crewe at 11.30am.
Just managed to get the 2004 with a fair wind behind the tram.
It was chokker, standing room only with City fans and many others. Some of the City fans were singing loudly but not in too bad a way to offend - one lad was singing 'who the flip are Man United' to the amusement of a family who obviously knew the proper words.
At Alderley Edge more than half a dozen 'Alderley Edge' type women got on, done up to the nines, no spring chickens but quite fit to us old men, and the paraded the whole length of our coach making sure every one saw them and I have to admit as they passed my eyeline at hip level I did have a look.
They sat down and turned out to be more pissed and singing longer and louder than any of the City fans. Bloody nuisance really.
Anyway they realised they were going in the wrong direction just as we were getting into Holmes Chapel and as I got off some were standing on the platform wondering what to do. If they did get off there, Holmes Chapel station at 9 o'clock on a Saturday night is the epitome of '' all dressed up and nowhere to go". It shouldn't have but it did amuse..
That apart you can get a Wayfarer ticket into Manchester for just £6 and it even covers the trams and buses in Manchester. It is great value.
So as I sat down in the Grove I counted up
Pint in pub next to HC station £1.90
Return travel £6
Pint and a pie in the Grove £4.40
Total £12.30
which was less than the normal train and tram fare on its own. So I bought another beer out of my savings, and another.......
The match wasn't quite what we were expecting but three points and a good day out will do me.
