I was speaking to my rag mates at the weekend and I was just throwing praise in the air about how great our academy is coming along and how much I'm looking to the future of my blues! Then one of them turned round and said he's glad we're building and academy so United can poach our youngsters and it got me thinking ... Is it allowed to just take players from other clubs academies and what goes on in a youth contract situation?

if memory serves correct anyone under the age of 18 on a youth contract only can be approached by another club when his contract has less than 6 months left but to be approached by any club within the same country the contract has to have under one month left

in a word, no. if they fail to approach us before approaching a player they're liable to receive sanctions re Chelsea and Gael kakuta and even if they convince players under 23 to run down a contract and leave we can take them to a tribunal for a development fee re Chelsea and sturridge. plus they'd have to convince them to leave, only possible if they look the more attractive alternative.

The first time a player can sign a contract which the club can hold him to (I.e. which would require him to be "bought") is 16. Before that, it's totally legal to nick a player from another academy without consulting the academy first. Depending on how long the player was there first, the buying club may have to pay a "development fee" (substantially smaller than it used to be following the recent reforms to the academy system, now never more than a 5-figure sum really) but the "selling" club has no right to protest, they have to simply cash the cheque and deal with it.

After the age of 16, players can be held by their academies similar to how senior players are with the club itself.

What sort of idiot would up sticks from City's academy to join the scum, going nowhere?
LOL
