JFK

But an FMJ would not do that, certainly not one fired from a lower velocity rifle such as the Mannlicher Carcano carbine that Oswald is alleged to have used. You would not use an FMJ/carbine combination for a guaranteed kill. You might use a modern full-length barrel rifle with a significantly higher velocity, where the shock wave might be enough against a soft tissue target like the brain.

The use of an FMJ would be entirely consistent with the single bullet theory, where one bullet can cause injuries to more than one person, so the bullet that caused Connolly's injuries was almost certainly an FMJ. Bt an FJ is highly unlikely to have produced a "fist sized" exit wound. So it's unlikely to have been an FMJ that produced the spray of brains from the front of JFK's skull seen on the Zapruder film. That is far more consistent with the use of a frangible bullet that fragments on entry and therefore a shot from in front of the car.

Or behind it.

It is true that a full metal jacketed bullet was designed not to fragment when passing through soft tissue at high velocity, or bone at low velocity.

However, the full metal jacketed round that struck the President's head made impact traveling at nearly 1800 feet-per-second, just 200 feet-per-second shy of the full muzzle velocity of Oswald's Mannlicher-Carcano rifle, and immediately encountered dense skull bone. Further, the bullet hit the skull bone at an obtuse angle. Because of the angle, the speed, and the encounter with dense skull bone, the metal jacket surrounding the missile ruptured, exposing its lead core. The bullet and its exposed core continued to break up as it passed through the President's brain, leaving a trail of fine, dust-like fragments. Two large mangled fragments representing the nose and base of that full metal jacketed bullet were later found on the floor of the limousine.

By contrast, Governor Connally's right wrist radius bone (a less dense bone than skull bone) was struck sideways by a bullet traveling at just 1000-800 feet-per-second, a velocity much lower than the bullet that struck the President's head. The Connally wrist bullet was traveling slower because it had previously passed through the soft tissue of the President's neck and tumbled through the Governor's chest. Consequently, because of its slower speed, the side impact angle, and the reduced density of the wrist bone (as compared to skull bone) it encountered - this full metal jacketed bullet - dubbed the single bullet - suffered far less fragmentation.
This is a good post. I am not sure I am convinced. Many people who know their ballistics would disagree with this analysis. That said, this is the best attempt I have ever seen to explain the FMJ problem. Far better than simply squeezing one's eyes shut and repeating over and over that the bullet did not explode when in fact it did.

Of all the millions of words written in anger or certainty regarding arguably the greatest murder mystery of all time, the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, one testimony remains glaringly absent. The deposition of Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin, was silenced by Jack Ruby's bullet before he could tell his story to a shocked and grieving world. The Two Faces of Lee Harvey Oswald is a unique work. No other book in the public domain concentrates on Lee Oswald's point of view; a young man caught up by, then hopelessly trapped in, history. From the moment of his return from the Soviet Union, Oswald became tangled in a web of intrigue, deception and murder. And yet, no amount of speculation or rumour mongering can lend history in general and Oswald in particular, his own words. "I'm just a patsy!" Oswald screamed, as he was led along a corridor in the Dallas Police Building, shortly after his arrest that fateful weekend. We will never truly know how innocent, or guilty, Oswald was. But his memory deserves a hearing. The most accurate hearing possible.

Just to point out it was a carbine, which has a much shorter barrel, rather than a true rifle. Carbines were originally developed for cavalry units as they're smaller, lighter and easier to deploy. They also meet the requirements of mechanised and airborne troops as they take up less room than a rifle and are therefore better suited to carrying in APC's and helicopters.

Being shorter barrelled (the barrel of the M1 carbine is 18" compared to the M1 Garand's 24" for example) the muzzle velocity is about half that of a modern semi-automatic rifle. So 2000fps is relatively slow in rifle terms.

Well apparently in was Nixon because of the Skull and Bones society. Ricster did the research, pal.

They'll all be over on the Trump thread blaming him, or trying to implicate him in the assassination.....

He already cracked the case when he named Ted Cruz's dad as one of the main players behind the assassination.
