1904 was when it happened but 1905 was when we were punished. And fuck me, were we punished - with the harshest penalty in the history of English football all because some grassing **** at Aston Fucking Villa claimed we tried to pay them off to lose a game against us in order for us to try and secure the league and FA Cup double, and the subsequent investigation also turned up stories of City over-paying players (big deal - I'm sure that was happening elsewhere too). As far as I know, and I'm sure @Gary James can clarify, we were never actually proven to be guilty of bribing the Villa player, but the authorities decided to take Villa's word for it what with them being an establishment club with a lot of clout and City being the new kids on the block so to speak.

Fast forward 10 years and there was another case of match-fixing - this time involving none other than Manchester United and Liverpool where Liverpool deliberately threw a game (which helped United stave off relegation), but as the FA claimed this was fixed for betting purposes only the players involved in said betting scandal were punished (a total of 7) and the clubs and managers got off scot free, whereas in the 1905 case against City we had something like 17 players banned along with our chairman and manager being banned sine die.

Too much to say on this - if you want to know the full story of both these read my book Manchester A Football History - but here's a few highlights:

- 1904 MCFC win FAC and runners up in League. Immediately an investigation is launched because someone at the FA felt City were overpaying players. Some minor accounting issues are found; some directors forced to resign but basically northern press think it was a witch hunt against the new kids who had gone from formation as MCFC in 1894 to FA Cup winners and 3rd best supported team within a decade.
- 1905 City trying to win League are accused of trying to bribe AVFC's capt (a respectable England international). Lots of stuff happens at the game - including 1 of City's players being pulled into the Villa dressing room and then thrown out with cuts and bruises a few minutes later. Investigation set up. Villa's capt says Meredith tried to bribe him. Months and months of investigation follow and they conclude by claiming Meredith did attempt to bribe the Villa Capt (Meredith's own views changed when he was banned from receiving his wages) BUT MORE SIGNIFICANTLY that City had been overpaying players. There was a maximum wage and City were paying over that. 17 players, the manager, chairman, several directors etc. were banned. Yet, no evidence had been found 12 months earlier for all of this!
- 1915 MUFC & LFC players fix a match which ultimately guarantees Utd's survival (there were several weeks of games to follow but the 2 points would've relegated Utd). An investigation is set up and - guess what? - Utd's solicitor is asked to be one of the 3 investigators! He spends months on the case before admitting to a journalist that he hadn't even asked the players at Utd what had happened because he knew them and they were all of good character!

Oh, there's so much more!

That which responds directly point by point to all the allegations raised. Is it difficult to brief the press and answer the questions if no rules have been breached?

So you're happy for a trial to be conducted in the media glare?

Do City have to wait for UEFA to sanction us? Why not go to CAS now on the grounds that we entered into a settlement agreement that UEFA are seeking to re-open.

So you're happy for a trial to be conducted in the media glare?

If we have a strong defense against the allegations, then why not ? This is not going to go away until all the investigations are completed and proper answers are out there in the open.
