Agree, think it's bizarre to see people be talking him down so much.

Like most of these things, it's only a reaction to the ridiculous hype he gets, like anyone associated with that club. There are people who say he's a better manager than Pep when there's an absolute gulf in the number of trophies. We hear a lot about how he pushed City close, but he finished 1st or 2nd three times in nine seasons. So in nine seasons in charge, he only challenged for the title three times. Compare that to someone like Wenger, who won 3 titles, but also finished in the top 2 eight times in a row after his first season. Obviously, it'd be stupid to deny he's a fantastic manager, but scousers and the media like to hype him up to be one of the all time greats.
