They might have played in red in the 1933 and 1934 Cup Finals v. Everton and then Portsmouth. Both teams changed kits in both years to avoid a colour clash, the films on youtube show City in the dark shirts but can't tell if they're maroon or red.

They were described as scarlet. But if this picture accurately portrays them, they look suspiciously like United shirts.
