Talking sensible nonsense...; )
After reading the thread on today's kids being obese, i cast my mind back to when i was a lad in 79.

I found a job aged 15 as a butchers boy. I worked 4 days a week for an hour and all day Saturday. I earned £8 a week which i appreciated, even though i worked hard mopping the floors, cleaning meat cabinets, scrubbing the butchers block and also cleaning out the walk in fridge.

I worked hard and learned what it was like to earn money and not be given it for nothing by my parents.

Used to deliver papers every morning before school, went beating in the autumn for a pheasant shoot (best job ever) and worked at a dairy weekends and summer hols

My first job was helping my mum cleaning up at the pub at the end of the lane.
Then "potato picking".. I had thoughts of sitting high on the magnificent mechanical beast trundling up and down the field. How wrong I was. Us littlies spent about ten hours literally on our hand and knees crawling after the machine up and down the furrows collecting the tiny spuds that were missed.
By about 13 I was bottling up at the pub on weekend mornings. This led to the great scratch card heist at school (selling forty team names on a card for, "ahem" chirridy)
By 15 I worked both days at the weekend cleaning trucks at the local landscape gardening contractor (great source of dodgy porn mags, IIRC) and was out and about doing gardening in school holidays.
Also various seasonal shifts milking the cows and helping with the harvest at one of the farms.
Did this until I got a bar job.

Oh, and I used to get up early during the holidays and cycle about three miles to help a school mate with his paper round and share the spoils (ie spend it on sweets in the paper shop...)

I forgot about potato picking, used to go with my mum when I was really young. Didn't do a lot of work but whenever I smell fresh soil on a wet day I get flash backs of those days

I'm guessing you had no time to be another Augustus Glooop chomping on Mars bars and the like ; )

Paper round in the morning, evening and Saturdays & Sundays, Sunday was a fucking killer with all them bastard supplements.

Went working with my dad for a week when i was about 15 when he worked for Daly's as a gas fitter, had me shovelling all sorts of shit for a week on the construction site of an estate in lower Broughton, back breaker that was. Hard graft hurt no one, wish i could get my lazy 20 year old to grasp that fact!!

Selling trainers on Ashton market at 14 and dishwashing at 15 (loved that job being a fat get - always got a free feed end of the night)
