MANCHESTER CITY fans don't miss a trick even when they should have better things to do, like celebrating an FA Cup triumph.

The headline on an obscure City fan site this week is dedicated to the "Experts Who Got It Wrong".

It's a midly amusing trawl through a list of people, this one included, who called it wrong at the start of the season.

The Man who can... Roberto Mancini after Manchester City's Cup Final victory
Asked on the ESPN chat show Between The Lines whether Roberto Mancini would last until Christmas, the answer came back as an emphatic "no".

Among the other classics is former TalkSPORT presenter Mike Parry admitting he had never heard of David Silva or Yaya Toure.

Paul Merson claimed Manchester City "will struggle to finish in the top six" and a guy from the Times brilliantly said "tenth".

There then follows the predictable gag fest about media types and journalists knowing no more than the average fan and accusing them of all supporting traditional top four teams.

They're probably right about the first element, though wrong about the second.

Still, the fact Roberto Mancini finished the season as City's manager is an achievement in itself.

Given the amount of bust-ups, arguments and agitating that goes on behind the scenes at City it's a truly remarkable feat.

He has knitted together a team playing effectively and efficiently to qualify for the Champions League and FA Cup.

He even converted Toure from screening midfielder at Barcelona to double Wembley match-winner in his more advanced position.

He wants to assemble a team that can challenge for the game's top honours next season
Toure won two La Liga titles and the Champions League in front of Barca's back four, but he's now one of the main thrusts of City's forward play.

He has excelled in the position, especially in the second half of a campaign that gathered momentum after Christmas.

Next season will be the first time City have played in dual competitions at the very highest level.

As Mancini has already pointed out, Tottenham's squad was unable to cope with the demands of Champions League and Premier League football.

They didn't have the experience, but they did have some terrific results along the way against Inter Milan and Milan.

With the exception of Rafael van der Vaart, Tottenham failed to recruit enough top-class players for their Premier League form to remain unaffected.

Mancini wants to avoid the same mistakes, urging the money men to spend big again this summer for an assault on both competitions.

He wants Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal, and Samir Nasri is another Arsenal player on the wanted list.

Football administrator Brian Marwood responded by saying there will only be "tinkering" with the £300million super-squad.

He's worried by UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules, but Mancini doesn't want to play it by the book.

City's manager wants to acquire the players who can topple United, a sea of blue sweeping everything before them.

He will have those battles in the coming weeks when he presents his list of transfer targets for the summer.

But unless he can shift the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz, Craig Bellamy, Shaun Wright-Phillips and the rest of the casting, he can prepare to be disappointed.

That hasn't stopped Mancini planning and he wants to assemble a team that can challenge for the game's top honours next season.

As he knows only too well, getting it right is always a tough call.

wouldn't surprise me if this site is visited more than there are subscribers to the NoTW website, which is likely in the lower tens of thousands.
