Best headed goal by a City player...

i remember a colin bell header into the platt lane end , 72 ish
i swear his head was above the crossbar he climbed so high, dont think footage exists of this goal ,but it was talked about for years

Having read about the Watson header against Ipswich so many times on here it's nice to finally see it.

Aside from the Macken one mentioned before, this has to be up there:

I can guarantee no other BM person saw this, or even knows what I'm talking about. Gary might know of it.

Nov 15th 1947. City v Charlton, Div One. Charlton had a keeper called Sam Bartram, good player, bit of a nutter, a bit like Grobbelaar. A ball was put through the Charlton defence, and it became a race between Sam and City forward Andy Black to get there first. Outside his area, so he couldn't handle it, Bartram booted the ball straight at the onrushing Black, it him him smack on the forehead, flew back over Bartram and dropped into the empty net from about 35 yards out. I was there!!

If it had been recorded on TV, it'd be a cert for "What happened next?". It wwas a total freak, talked about for years. Andy Black later kept a pub at Moss Nook called the Tatton Arms (is it still going?) and there was a press cutting of a cartoon showing the event pinned up at the bar.

Does it ring a bell with anyone?

Big S, I don't remember your favourite header as born a little later (my earliest favourite header was Bobby Johnston's which a few other posters have mentioned - although memories fade, I thought it was on the edge of the area till I saw the posted clip!). However, a little snippet about "Andy Blacks" - aka The Tatton - my dad used to tell me how he'd played footy inside the bar (with Frank as goalie) when having a late drink in the pub. The pub is still open. I'll relay your story to dad about the cartoon etc. Cheers.

I nominate this crazy effort, Chris Shuker v Notts county 11-9-2001. His one and only goal for city:

*I can't find a video that I can embed, but there's one on this page:

Remember being at that game. Strange atmosphere as it was on the day of the terrorist attacks in New York.

I remember watching this goal from the Kippax and thought it was the most powerful header I had ever seen!

12 pages and nobody said this and also his interview after the game was magic

It's the opposite for me. The internet is great for lots of things but it can ruin memories.

I'd relived that goal in drunken conversations countless times. And each time it got a bit better and a bit further out. At the last count, I think I had him heading it round about five yards inside the Ipswich half. Bit disappointed to finally see it again and find out it wasn't much more than a 12 yard glance.
