When I was a kid it was our winter ‘curse’. About 90% of kids had them. Blooming painful and ITCHY!!

I always get them in november, due to a touch of diabetis and poor blood circulation in the extremities...ie toes. Not been so bad at all this year but the last 2 years were fun.....

Chilblains, rickets, dropsey: had em all and still here.

Recall as a kid having really cold toes and bunging them in hot water was a sure way how to induce chilblains.

Can still remember my Dad telling me to get my feet away from the fire as I would get chilblains.
I'm sure he made it up.

My mum said something similar in winter if I warmed my hands near fire she'd "Don't do that you'll get hot aches." Wasn't much of a deterrent as first few times I thought she was saying "hot cakes".

I think our parents were selfish and just didn't want us blocking the heat.
