That's a flawed argument though. Why follow a trend because it's a trend? Ferguson and Wenger weren't 20 - 30 years ago either. Plus importantly what it takes to win football matches isn't a director of football and never will be imo

It's not a trend. It's a complete change to how football businesses are run and has been adopted by almost every club in every country in the known footballing world.

This is like suggesting that we should ride a horse and these cars things are just a trend. Even most English clubs including City have used a DoF model for years. We won the title in 11/12 with a DoF. Chelsea have a DoF. So do Barca, both Madrids, Bayern, Dortmund, both Milans, basically everybody in the world.

Ferguson always had a DoF in Bobby Charlton though he was less hands on than the modern roles. Wenger grew up in a time before they were popular and has resisted one and look what he's done over the past 10 years - nothing for a club the size of Arsenal.

Nobody is suggesting that to win football matches you need a DoF. The suggestion is to consistently win football matches over many years you need a DoF now because giving managers carte blanche over transfers when the average appointment only lasts a year or so waste hundreds and hundreds of millions of pounds, and gets you pretty much nowhere. Also that the modern manager role has grown too big for them to be fucking about negotiating transfer fees and the like with other people or sit negotiating contracts with agents.

Bollocks that Bobby charlton was ferguson a director of football.

I saw him as an over-promoted club legend/ambassador - never a Director of Football.

Key ingredients for me are a chairman willing to invest. A manager who knows how to get the best out of players he has and how to spot players who will strengthen team. And players who want to win. Dof unnecessary imo

Who should the 100 strong international scouting team report?

Let's say a Chief Scout.

Ok, now who should be bothered to go and negotiate with agents in often hours long legal meetings?

Let's say a Chief Negotiator.

Now who can report to the board in all of their endless meetings and talk about the potential impacts of any new business decision on the footballing side?

Let's say a Chief Analyst.

But who does Yaya Toure's agent get on the phone to every day demanding a new TV for his residence because Kompany's is bigger?

Let's say that we have Chief Housekeeper.

Who interviews potential candidates for top positions in the medical departments or the nutrition departments that care for players?

Let's say a Chief Interviewer.

Who is looking at the composition of each squad over the next 5 years rather than the next 5 games, with good knowledge of both the scouting departments and the Academy, and basing purchasing decision off of them?

Let's say a Chief Squad Specialist

What about liaising with the Academy in terms of player recruitment and possible promotion candidates from the Under 13s to Under 15s?

Let's say Chief Academy Manager.

In fact instead we could really combine all of these roles into one person who does all of the stuff that used to get in a manager's way of preparing for the next game and allow them to sort of be a Head of the "Football Department" so we have a clear chain of command and a football intelligent person who can handle all of these problems that aren't really to do with one specific team but are instead problems with the business logistics.

We'll combine them all and call him a Director of Football.

Excellent.

Or let experts in each role do them jobs not a jack of all trades master of none?

Isn't the biggest case for the DoF model continuity? The shite and dippers had far greater stability than us for long periods.

Besides, could you imagine Bacon tugging his forelock to a DoF?

Liverpool almost went bankrupt recently and have had 4 managers in 5 years. Not exactly a period of stability.

United had the same manager for 25 years and completely fell apart when he left, having to spend almost a quarter of a billion to even slightly catch up.

We can't keep a manager for 25 months, having to spend huge sums of money every time we change is going to bankrupt us.

I really hope we go for this guy class act. Poor season at dortmund but loses best players every year. Discuss!

I dIdn't even think of him..... Do you reckon we could get him???

I think he would be brilliant at City. Before they were cynically robbed of all their assets by the cheats of Bayern, Dortmund were fantastic. In fact their performance at our place was the best I have seen by a visiting team. He would be a legend for us and could bring Reus with him.

Not got time to keep up with all the chatter on here but you do seem to be on form today.

A logistical nightmare that. You'd have 30 people all claiming ownership over certain situations where they overlap which leads to internal power plays and the like.

Same reason why we might have a coach that specifically works with strikers and a coach who specifically works with defenders but only one manager. What you're suggesting is taking away the manager and letting the coaches get on with it. Too many cooks and all of that
