Anyone on here in the know regarding buying/playing the Drums - My 12 year old lad is learning to play at school and I’m thinking of getting him his own set.

Any advice on the best way to start him off and of price range and brand would be most welcome.

Cheers

I can play drums but I don't know much about them nor do I own a kit but a mate of mine owns the "Pearl Rythm Traveller" kit which is nice. Pearl are a well known brand and the kit is very good. They have muffler thingies so you can make them not as loud, therefore keeping good relations with neighbours ;) and at £250 -£300 quite cheap. You could get a kit for half that price tho which I suspect for a 12 year old, who may or may not still want to play them in a year, would be a better bet. Depends on how loaded you are :P

When I started about 10 years ago I used a Honer kit. It was around £300 with cybals and hardware. Although I have a few kits now, I still give the Honer a bang from time to time.

No need to jump in and buy a really expensive kit, there are many good learner kits on the market. If you have a browse through online drum shops you will find most offer budget kits for between £200-£400. If you can find one with a cybal and hardware package, happy days. As for brands, when I started there were only a few companys that offered "really cheap" drum kits but there are many more on offer today. Alot of drum shops offer there own brand drum kits and I would say this is the best way to go. There is no point going out and buying a "pro" kit as if he gets bored and gives up its a bit of a waste of money.

If he decides to stick with drumming you could always grab him a really nice kit for his 16th birthday.

Check out the following link. I have used these guys for bits and bobs in the past and they are VERY good.

Would be a good forum to get your son on .

I'm a guitarist so not much help re drums. I just suggest that you do as much research as possible...there will be loads of forums and websites to check out...and I'd bet there are a few drumming magazines out there (buy one to check it out).

If money is tight...I think there is a government loan scheme in place with some of the online retailers called take it away...backed by the arts council. I haven't looked at this closely but it looks like the loans are interest free. Take a look here for more info <a class="postlink" href="http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/news/news-story/news_id/3321/?utm_source=frontpage_sidebar&utm_medium=banner&utm_content=tia_now_online&utm_campaign=brand_prom" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/news/news ... brand_prom</a>

Here's the actual link to the arts council <a class="postlink" href="http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/takeitaway/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/takeitaway/</a>
