There are whole load of possible reasons why he might have done this (mental issues/cry for help/fear/frustration), but none of them excuse making stuff up to push an agenda. That's what the MAGA idiots do.
This has done a fair amount of damage to the credibility of the anti-Trump movement, and no doubt the extreme right-wing media will take full advantage.

Yes, that's what has been suggested.I'd never heard of this bloke up until a few weeks ago, I accept that I live in the UK not US, but how famous is he?
Are people really suggesting that some bloke who may or may not be famous on a show which is hardly a roaring success, pays 2 people to beat him up, goes to hospital, reports it to the police, all in the name of some anti-Trump protest? Really?
If he was that important, why not just take to social media every time Trump lies about something or does something which he doesn't agree with?

There are a lot of people who are massively fearful of the levels or racial hatred being stirred up by Right-Wing extremists, who are also frustrated at the apparent lack of the GOP's appetite to do anything about it.
When you have a President who openly calls for the death penalty for 6 black men, but says absolutely nothing when those same men were ultimately found not guilty it just adds fuel to the fire.
