Last Film You Saw

Sing Street

Independent Irish film. Fucking excellent. Really enjoyed it. Quite funny and touching

8.7/10

A United Kingdom - brilliant fictionalised version of true story. 1947: black king of Bechuanaland studying law in London falls for white woman insurance clerk. His uncle (acting as regent) says give her up or give up the right to rule ( a bit of class prejudice too - she's a "salesman's daughter" - though her father had been a captain in the army). British government doesn't want to upset neighbouring South Africa as they start apartheid (and sell us gold and uranium). Attlee government deceives him; Churchill deceives him. His own people support him and demand their rightful chief and his wife as "mother of the nation". He goes on to be democratically elected first president of independent Botswana.

In a year where overt racism has become politically OK, it's almost a timewarp. Best scene: High Commissioner orders tribal gathering during direct rule from Britain; he turns up in his plumed hat, and no-one comes!
