The EFL rules on loans make interesting reading https://www.efl.com/-more/governance/efl-rules--regulations/section-6---players/

The relevant bits are shown below:

54.4.1 A maximum of 5 Players registered on a Temporary Loan Transfer can be named in the Players listed on a team sheet for any individual match played under the auspices of The League. This maximum shall reduce to 4 Players where a Club names a Player on the team sheet who is registered on an Emergency Goalkeeper Loan;

54.4.2 No Club may sign more than 4 Players on a Temporary Loan Transfer from another Club (or club) in any Season, of which no more than 2 Players may be over the age of 23.

Looking at this we could find a partner club in say League One and send four of our youngsters to them for a season. That team's fans would still retain their club and all it's history and could be turned into promotion contenders which would quiet any dissenting voices. No doubt other teams in that division would complain but the smart ones would try and make similar arrangements with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal etc.

For example, Callum Doyle is on loan at Sunderland who have significant gaps in the rest of their squad. If we had also sent them Tommy Doyle, Morgan Rogers and say Claudio Gomes then they would be far stronger and our lads would benefit from playing/socialising with players they already know.

Supposing all 4 were standouts for the club, they'd then face losing all 4 for the following season. They'd have to find replacements, either further loans or purchases. I just can't see the other teams buying into that scenario.

I think part of the point of loans is to develop youngsters as men as much as footballers, to get them out of their comfort zone and see how they cope. Transplanting a load of mates at the same time wouldn’t really help with that

I’ve always wondered about a negative loan fee structure with triggers depending on games played. That would incentivise taking our youngsters and giving them games.

Also I suspect you could find workarounds for the 4 player limit by selling another player for £1 with a £1 buy-back. It would get shut down pretty quickly though.

Thanks for the responses.

Centurions - yes losing four important players would be difficult but the loans could possibly be continued in the Championship and the teams would have more income because of promotion. However if none of the loan players return then the goal for the following season could realistically just not to be relegated but if that did happen would the club really be any worse off? Some of my best City memories are of successful promotion campaigns.

LongsightM13 - I am not sure that staying in crappy digs with nobody to talk to is really the best option for the development of youngsters. Barcelona had great success with their "La Masia" system where the players all live in the same space.

Thanks again for the replies - I was really just daydreaming about how to get our youngsters to make the jump to men's football. I know the club hierarchy are keen on B teams as in Spain and this seemed a viable "halfway" option :)

How many did we send to NAC Breda at any one time?

Could we not just send Delap, Lavia, Palmer, Couto and Sandler to Arsenal?! They’d all probably get in their first team!
