Nice one. My careers advisor advised me not to only look for Uni's nearby - he even suggested I go to Brighton!
Clearly, he is not a football fan and does not understand that I need my Manchester City.

Hey Ireland is Superman,

So you got into UCLAN then? That's mint, congrats you will love it. The lecturers are really good and I've loved the course up here. Can't believe it's gonna be over in like two weeks.

I've finished my lectures now - how depressing.

Hopefully me in a few years (fingers crossed), taking up journalism at uni if I manage to pass my A-Levels

ditto
A word of warning lads: do something more specialist like History, Politics, Business, Finance or English Literature at University. It keeps the doors open to other possible careers (journalism is a very tough industry to succeed in) and Journalism degrees really don't help push you to the front of the queue anyway.

Politics, Business, and Finance, in particular, will also help to open up avenues in more specialist publications. Everyone wants to do news reporting for a national, but the vast majority end up doing other things because there are very few such positions out there.

For good Liam? Now that is depressing! Any ideas what you are gonna do now? Or dya not want to think about that yet? don't blame you really! I've got this week, then I'm off for Easter, then I've got a week after that...then I'm done. Back to paying taxes!

The Radio 5 show i mentioned last night on this thread is available to hear on R5 site.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jgqf8/Donal_MacIntyre_29_03_2009/

go to 21:20 to listen to relevant bits but bear in mind the topic of discussion was bribery, match fixing, money and image laundering and even contract killing affecting Ukranian football

I just had a reply from Vicky Kloss, Head of Communication, this morning. The club are looking in to this at a high level.
Still would like to hear from the budding journalists though.

Apart from the needless dig and tenous links to MCFC's failed signing of Kaka, I was amazed by his last comments after mentioning MCFC - "so there's a distorion a corruption, what's known as financial doping." at 22:41

ayeeeeeeee ... im doing history :)

The last thing I want to read in my paper is an article written by someone who is 'pro' the club they support.

There are a few characters who are it now (Martin Smuels, for example, has written some horrendously biased articles regarding West Ham and he and his employers should be ashamed of it) and then there are others (the majority of the press) who are just bandwagon and hype merchants (which is why City have dominated many parts of the media in recent months).

Anyone thinking of entering a career to "promote City" or in order to present positive stories regarding the club really needs to reassess their priorities, think about their professional ethics and should be viewed very sceptically by employers in my view.

Don't get influenced by the views of football fans. Most of us are pathetic specimins who have a nervous breakdown whenever they see something that might be critical of the club. As a professional journalist to be influenced by this and take some sort of opposite view of being 'pro City (or anyone else) is no better than people who take a negative view based on their own background.

Yeah, there are some journalists who are biased and a disgrace. They aren't worth reading though. There are a load more who just write whatever will generate the most hype. The best journalists write stuff that they believe and report on facts. They still get accused of being biased a lot because any set of fans that sees them writing something negative against their club will automatically react like a seven year old with a persecution complex.

Any potential journalists on here should not be influenced by the pathetic reaction of many to any negative articles regarding City. Taking the opposite view and being intentionally 'Pro City' would be just as much of a professional disgrace as anyone who is intentionally biased or negative based on their club views.

More to the point, who wants to read stuff that is just 'pro' your club. Well, probably loads actually, but that's because most football fans are just delicate little flowers who see anyone with a negative view as a personal affront and as persecuting them and their family. They should stick to reading fanzines and any decent football journalist shouldn't be influenced by that sort of person at all.

Agreed, but I am fed up of reading so much shite and rubbish about City in the press. Everybody says to write the truth, but there is such much bollocks in journalism it's unreal. Will just try my best to be respected and credible but include my own opinion. A lot of people don't like the truth, they want it sugar-coated over as I have learned in the past. But we shall see what happens.

disagree mate. you cant deny that there has been an unbelievable amount of dirt thrown at mcfc in the press that far outweighs the positive. its not about bigging up the club. its about getting the positives out there. people not connected with the club will only ever hear bad things until someone sorts the balance out. its not about being biased. and to call people delicate little flowers is very patronising for wanting to do something about it.

that's really disappointing. macintyre has gone downhill extremely rapidly. I wont listen to this programme as i have better things to do with my time than get irate at that loser, but i've noticed that his 'investigations' on radio 5 have generally been lacking in any sort of focus or substance.
