This thing i'm typing on is taking fecking ages to load pages. It's old and it's about time I got a new one. All I use it for is the usual. On here, a few emails, shemale midget porn, keeping up with mates on fb/twitter.

I don't need anything top spec or costing £££+ . Just something that will work.

Any ideas?

If its old and you've never done it before wipe windows and see if that makes a big difference in the speed. It's worth a try and could save you some cash as you don't do that much on it.

I run CC cleaner and Malware bytes on it. TBH it must be 6/7 year old. It's always trying to overheat too, got a desk fan under it just to keep it working!

Just had the same conversation will the girlfriend, so ran all the cleaning programmes and updated windows then checked its hardware, only has 512 meg of ram. Upgraded it to 2 gig and it's perfect for what she needs.

If those are the only uses have you thought about a tablet instead? Really fast and convenient. iPads are expensive but Amazon are bringing out Kindle Fire next month for £129 to £159 depending on spec. Much cheaper than a laptop and previews sound promising.

No good if you use MS office programes (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint) though or if you need a larger screen.

Not arsed about Office, can get an iPad2 for £329. Would onnly cost me £229 in real terms as I have vouchers from work.

Don't know what the pro's and con's of an iPad are though.

I'm using one now. Great for browsing the web, e-mails, tweeting, watching TV or iPlayer (= TV after the event) radio, YouTube, iTunes, apps/games, taking photos and loads more. Lightning fast connection, page turning, downloads, etc. Much handier, lighter and more portable than a laptop. Less susceptible to viruses (?). Heard it's ideal for watching porn although I couldn't possibly verify that!

Only downside for me is it's inability to manipulate files like spreadsheets and Word docs although you can attach them, open and read them. So I need a laptop too.

iPad is generally considered the benchmark but there are cheaper tablets out here and on the way, e.g. Kindle Fire. What do others think?

I made a post on overheating a while ago, its a long read but worth it if you have the time:
