put the tin opener on sideways, so you are cutting the top of the tin, not the tin lid.

Probably too late now...but for future reference keep a pair of snipe nosed pliers in the cutlery drawer. Grip metal tongue where key fits and keep turning until strip is removed from can. Plenty of other uses for pliers in the kitchen. Pulling out the odd stray bones in salmon fillets to name just one.

Use a manual tin opener from a penknife if the twisty one won't work.
