PQ17

It's was good watching this to remind yourself of the unbeleivable sacrifices those guys made in the war. And how dangerous and uncomfortable life was for them. It made me think I've got absoltely nothing in this world to complain about.

Caught this on iPlayer and I'm extremely pleased that I did.

Wonderful program with a passionate presenter telling an interesting story important to the nation and the War Effort in general.

Wish BBC made more of these types of things, was interesting and informative.

Unbelievable programme.

Clarkson has a habit of producing amazing tv like this away from TG.

Riveting and heartbreaking in equal measure.
He made a wartime documentary in 2003 called The Victoria Cross For Valour, it had a real twist at the end
The last story he told was about Major RobertHenry Cain VC, he won his VC at the battle of Arnhem for destroying German armour somehow with the almost useless PIAT anti tank weapon, he held up the German advance almost single handed and only stopped firing when wounded
At the end of the programme he revealed that Major Cain was his Father In Law, Major Cain was so modest about his exploits and VC he never told his daughter Frances that he had won it so subsequently Clarkson never knew neither, they only found out after his death in 1974 when they went through his papers
When they asked Major Cains wife why he never mentioned it she said ''he did not think it was worth a mention''
Different breed of people in the war years, i salute them all

I remember this documentary well, it was brilliant. Major Cain puts a lot of today's generation to shame especially the whinging drivel you see on X Factor, Jeremy Kyle and Big Brother.

Has he made many wartime documentaries?

I'd watch them all if they're of this quality

-- Mon Jan 06, 2014 12:06 am --

I found that doc you guys were talking about on Youtube by the way

I understand your sentiments to a degree but dont forget there are many brave youngsters in todays armed forces, at the moment i have 3 friends whos lads are out in Afghanistan

My old man was on PQ17. He was an anti-aircraft gunner (Pom Pom) on one of the Destroyer escorts. He actually spent some time in hospital in Murmansk due to a perforated eardrum sustained when he was at the business end of his gun and his mate pulled the trigger, sending a 20mm shell whistling past his ear. He always maintained that the Russians who treated him were spot-on
I've applied for his Atlantic Star, posthumously, as he died in 1975. I have all his discharge papers/photos etc. Very brave men! Some of the details he told me were harrowing.
I never caught the programme first time round but will watch it tonight.

As soon as you get his Atlantic Star cherish it, every man on those convoys was a hero, they knew they were sailing into a freezing hell and they could be gone at any minute, as i said in a previous post my Dad never got that posting and boy was he grateful
