Howard Webb is in New Zealand coinciding with the FIFA U20s. On a TV interview last night he talked about that infamous World Cup Final (remember the one - Nigel's kung foo kick). He referred to an incident that he didn't see and didn't want to guess at the nature of the offence so just talked to the players. That made me go back to the dodgy penalty the scum got against Palace when the referee assumed the defender had handled the ball.

And some TV commentator said the standard of refereeing today in England, and around the world, was at a very high level - methinks he needs to go to Specsavers because the standard is appalling.

Referees need help.

With the speed of the Premiership, the fact they're making game deciding decisions on a one time look in real life isn't good enough.

It's 2015, why hasn't video technology been introduced?

It will never happen. Once you remove "in the opinion of the referee" from the Laws of Association Football, you lose the beautiful game.

Been saying this for years, video replays would be worth at least 5/6 points to us over a season and would take that amount off the other 'top' clubs, midtable clubs would also gain apart from the raggy ones who would be the most affected in the league.

I think the whole thing would be greatly helped if the referees were allowed to come out after a match and explain why they choose to give something or not. Think technology would help but how many times have you seen experts still arguing over a decision even after watching numerous replays.

I also think that at the very top level in this country they should relegate the bottom 3 referees from the Premier league. They are subjected to the most stringent assessments ever yet unless they make a complete mess there is no sanctions. In every other level of football referees can be promoted or demoted except from the Premier league. At the end of the season demote the bottom 3 to the Football League & promote the top 3 out of the Football League. As it stands, unless one of the Elite group retires they are in for good.

Professional refs are "directed" by EPL/UEFA/FIFA.

If video tech was introduced it would show ever more the corrupt nature of the game.

Prem refs do football league games as well anyway, so there's no real relegation.

What they need to do is turn it into rugby refereeing, video help, with audible mics, absolute respect, and have a proper graduate scheme with a proper, tangible career progression program, and make it extremely well-paid to the point where none of them need tempting.

We need the finest minds and people to want to become referees. It needs to be a desirable and respected career, whilst it isn't you only get a certain type of character at the top of the game.
