Society was much more homophobic 20 years ago and they were obviously worried about fans’ abuse, which I’m sure they still are very much.

But you said the abuse wouldn't be particularly bad at most grounds. So probably no worse than anything which a player is normally subjected to..... Dad
And I expect an awful lot of supporters to have the utmost respect and generosity for a player who came out, so this would counterbalance any abuse

It hasn't and it shouldn't, but do you not believe that there is something very homophobic in that not a single current premier league player from any era was openly gay
