A taxi driver locked two teenage girls in his cab and drove them to a police station because they were 60p short of the full fare, it has been claimed.

Yeva Wilcox and Sophie Heath , both 18, say their driver in Newcastle-under-Lyme was angry with them when they didn’t have enough money to pay a £6.80 fare.

They had been out clubbing when they took an Intercity Private Hire cab home.

However, when they reached Ms Heath’s home at 3am and informed the driver they were 60p short, he asked them to go inside and wake up her parents to get the money, the teenagers claimed.

Yes, the taxi driver was a fuckwit. But is there some unexplained reason why the girls hadn't left plenty aside for the fare? Didn't they call the taxi company earlier in the evening to get a rough idea of what the fare would be, then keep enough cash to pay for the fare? Say, for example, they were quoted a tenner for the fare. Keep 20 quid in their purses, and the job's a good 'un. Anyway, that driver could be in trouble. Would locking them in his cab be classed as false imprisonment?

Either stop the taxi when the click hits £6 or go in the house and get some change... something doesn't ring right about this story.

Taxi driver probably gets around £1-£5 in tip for every journey and he reacts like this over 60p - no wonder people turn to Uber

You get the impression that it was the students' sense of entitlement that pissed off the taxi driver.

Yeah there has to be some level of provocative behaviour there, he's down more than 60p bringing them to the station and giving a statement.
