The Reckoning

Horrible c*nt. There were also a lot of enablers around him at the BBC and other establishments he was close to who got away with it.

Tried. Parents didn’t want to know. “Don’t tell tales.”

My patrol leader’s mum was on the board of governors at the school he taught at and later confirmed he’d been let off when caught. Back then, someone would be a dirty old man and not a child porn magnate.
I was in cubs, in the 80s, til about aged 10. Recall thinking that the actual leader was just odd as fuck and one of the other ‘leaders’ was either a bully to some lads (ones like me who probably didnt take it overly serious) or overly creepy to the ones that did.
That was me out of there without really knowing why

Spot on. The lead officers were taking all the credit for Sutcliffe being apprehended when the ones who deserved the plaudits were the copper who originally stopped him, and the sergeant who had the presence of mind to return the following day to where he (Sutcliffe) had gone for a slash and found a knife, hammer, and rope that he'd discarded.
Tbh mate, that’s never sat right with me, and I think because of the relief, it’s something that’s often overlooked.

I think we’re around the same age so we both understood the magnitude of this case as it would have been for Police officers around the country, everybody knew his MO, his description etc etc, so to let a guy walk off and go for a piss in these circumstances is fuckin ridiculous in my book, and in many ways illustrates the blasé nature of how the case was treated at times.

So yes, they went back and found the items, eventually, but it should never have got to that stage in the first place for me, it was rank amateurish at best.

I was a Beaver, Cub and Scout. Towards the end of Scouts, I became a bit of a cult hero to the other lads by playing up all the time. Acting the fool to amuse people. There was an intimate trip to the Netherlands for a Jamboree and I was banned from going. My mum was angry but I stand justified.

I’d changed troops when I went to high school and my first bosses were great. Tosh, Bosun and Nunc we called them. Men who put huge amounts of their spare time in to providing good activities for young lads.

There were and and still are lots of protected saville type characters around.
Funny how the likes of Elvis never get mentioned even though he was with Priscilla from the age of 14!!
