I'm sure he was a very good footballer, butCharles Charlie Charles was the greatest player of Finney's era?

And there was me thinking you meant John Charles

Voted Juventus' best foreign player. Says a great deal when they've had the likes of Zidane, Nedved, Trezeguet, Thuram, and Sivori play for them.

Whenever friends were visiting I often took them to the National Football Museum in Preston. Tom Finney was always there and would happily chat to anyone who acknowledged him.

Known as "The Preston Plumber" he told us how he would do a bit of work in the morning, get the bus to Deepdale and turn out for North End in the afternoon.

Also known as a true Gentleman. My Grandad told me so many stories about him and purely by coincidence he was 18 on the day Tom was born.

He said all the same things as the experts. Tom could use either foot and when playing centre forward he used both.

Presented trophies to my team when we were kids at some competition many years ago,a true gent as well, really nice fella, and from all accounts shit hot at football !!

My Grandad was part of that generation who travelled to watch him play and I have many happy memories of how he talked about him as a player and a person.

He has a website that confirms everything you said - <a class="postlink" href="http://sirtomfinney.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://sirtomfinney.com/</a>

He's president of my hometown team, Kendal Town, I only hear praise from club official's who say he is a lovely man. It's a privilege having such a legend as president of my local team.

Well, I can tell you about Tom. I saw him playing for England v N Ireland in 1949 at Maine Rd (God, that makes me feel old..) and he utterly destroyed the Irish full-back, Alf McMichael - England won 9-2 (incidentally a World Cup qualifier, as the Home international Championship was used as such, so we can say that Maine Rd hosted England's first-ever WC match).
I also saw Tom play for PNE at Maine Rd in Dec 1950, on a snow-covered pitch, and he destroyed City too, PNE winning 3-0, if I remember rightly. He was a great all-round player, like a two-footed Gareth Bale only better, and the only better ALL ROUND player I ever saw was Alfredo di Stefano. He could score goals as well as create, unlike Stanley Matthews. Memories...

I've done a bit more research and I can't disagree with a single word you've said here.
