Tracing the owner of malicious email

We had an email forwarded to us at work from a third party. It was malicious and full of untruths and lies. I don't want and can't go into details. However the point is we want to know who sent the email.

Does anyone know if it is possible to
find out if we can trace who sent the email or roughly the location?

I know it's a tall order but just thought I'd ask.

How reliable is that IP address thing? I'm unsure if "Bessie" was brought up on Bluemoon but it was basically a catfish Twitter account luring in Blues. The alleged owner was found but then denied it.
