Police hunting the driver of a van that killed 13 people in a terror attack on Barcelona have shot and killed a man in a suicide vest.
Catalan authorities said an operation was underway in Subirats, a municipality 50 miles from the city of Barcelona.
They posted on Twitter: "The suspicious man in #Subirats wears what looks like a belt of explosives attached to the body. This man has been shot down."
A robot has been sent in by the Spanish bomb squad, they added.
Spanish media are also reporting that the man suspected of driving a van into pedestrians on Thursday has been arrested.
Newspaper El Pais said Younes Abouyaaquob had been "shot and detained" after being spotted by a witness.
The paper added the man shouted "Allahu Akbar" and is now lying face down in the street.
